The (Legal) Free Games Thread

Streets of Rage Remake is a great fan remix of SEGA’s loved franchise. It combines elements and content from 1, 2, and 3, allows you to set the rules and mechanics as combinations of any of those games, has new cut scenes, enemies, playable characters, bosses, a ton of unlockables, and much more. It’s playable solo, or with the help of a CPU character, or 2 player (no online). The game is also editable with its own tools so you could make your own custom content once you’re done with it. This was originally going to be the final version, but a few bugs were discovered so they planned to do another release to fix those as well as tone down the difficulty for all the modes except for Mania. Sadly, this wasn’t meant to be. SEGA has sent them a cease & desist but there are many mirrors to get the game from still, like this one.

Why did they do it with the SoR2 art style? Am I the only one who was didn’t likechange from SoR1 to SoR2? SoR1’s was perfect.

A.R.C. Squadron isn’t intended to be free but it currently is so it fits here I guess. It’s a multiplayer combat flight game that’s got great, simple controls and unique visuals, made with Unreal Engine 3. It’s extremely early in development but I quite like what I’ve played of it. The latest patch also added a single player speed run course that’s quite challenging on top of the main team deathmatch and capture the orb modes. Here are a few screenshots:

Streets of Rage Remake?s bugfix release hasn?t been officially dismissed, so I?m still hoping (pending resolution of the Sega issue) we get it.

That online play was scrapped was somewhat disappointing, but I?m much more likely to pester my dad for a game (as in our olden days of SoR2 co-ops) than anyone online, anyway. :anjou_happy:

just been doing my annual scrounge for Xfiles stuf on the net and came across the game Area 51, was released as freeware… well worth playing. mite have to bust out a older pc though. doest play well on a 64bit op sys

Realm of the Mad God is out of beta and better than ever. It’s a flash online action RPG that plays like a free roaming shmup yet has stats, loot, potions, loads of classes, mini bosses, bosses, towns, vendors, pets, etc. And perma death. The tutorial alone is pretty fun/ny.

Valve Software’s Team Fortress 2 is now free to play also. There are microtransactions for items but most of them are cosmetic while most can also be obtained by in-game mechanics. There are exceptions but not enough to make you feel hindered if you don’t buy anything. I never did.

Uwabami Breakers, a free danmaku (bullet hell shooter, a la Ikaruga) game made in part by the creator of the Touhou Project, is still available for download. Three levels long, but beating the first level by itself will take you quite some time.

You’re best off googling for instructions on how the games unique life system works.

Escape from Puppy Death Factory is a cool little flash game by the creator of the Merry Gear Solid games I mentioned in another page. It’s a puzzle platform game. Possibly action too later on, I’m not quite sure if it actually adds enemies and such into the mix in later parts.

Arvoesine is a cute, tough 8bit action platformer.

It’s sold for a few bucks, and now after bombing it’s also free.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=. You need to have Steam and Source SDK as it’s a Source modification, though any game ownership shouldn’t be required (and if it is, just get the free Team Fortress 2).here

Thanks Solo. Now I don’t have to buy the Orange Box to play this game everyone raved about. And they thankfully have a Mac Version.

Stealth Bastard is free and awesome.

From the developers of Explodemon and Fluidity it’s pimped as Super Meat Boy meets Metal Gear Solid, and this is their love child. Level editor/sharing included.

Epic Inventor is a free 2D Minecraft-like with the focus on creating contraptions.

yo alexander, thanks for the linksharing :] what do you mean with "after bombing it is also free " ?

It didn’t sell well originally. Or at least that’s what the indiegames.com blog mentioned.
