Well, to be fair, now that the game is made, they don’t have much choice other than to support the game. In their minds they may be thinking “This game sucks, this isn’t what I signed up to do,” but they can’t say that. (Not if they want anything left of their career.) A company can’t release a game out there saying “Yeah, it’s inferior to our earlier product but please buy it anyway.” It doesn’t work that way. They have to support it.
Perhaps it’s better to argue that the game shouldn’t have been made, but once it’s far enough down the line that it’s coming out no matter what, the producers and everyone behind it has to support it no matter what they personally think.
I wouldn’t expect them to come out and say “Yes Shining Force Neo is inferior, don’t buy it, buy Fire Emblem instead”. But, there’s no reason for them to and say that it is deeper than Shining Force III, when it so obviously isn’t. That’s what Shining Force fans are annoyed about. It feels like we’re being lied to, and betrayed… which, to be honest, I think is very close to the truth.
I have no problems with Sega making money by creating Shining Force Neo. I do have problem with them taking Camelot’s series that I’ve gained a lot of respect for over the years and changing almost every aspect of it to something inferior and then calling it a needed improvement to the series, and then making money off those lies.
Geoffrey, you’ve kinda gone into fanboy mode with that statement. As I said to Goonboy (and got ignored), it is possible that these people have a difference of opinion with yourself.
Although, granted, if suddenly people decided Sonic games would set at Mario speed, I would be upset too.
But why Sega would be making a sequel to a classic turn based strategy game if they didn’t care about the large scale battles which are the heart of the series itself? It seems to us that Shining Force Neo is nothing more than a cash-in on the Shining Force name, rather than the evolution of the classic system that it should have been. If Sega cared about the dignity surrounding the Shining Force name then they would have simply made Neo a Shining game and not a ?Force? title. The fact remains that Amusement Vision have recreated the Shining Force battle system in their own, mainstream inspired, image which has caused negative reactions from the vast majority of hardcore Shining Force fans… should Shining Force fans really expected to accept this?
Well you know they could have been some Panzer fans questioning SEGA when it was revealed that Panzer Dragon III would be a RPG. Can?t get much more a change in direction for a 3D shooter going to a RPG.
But I get the point ,using the Force in the title give people false hopes, and you can see fans of the series not happy at all.
Whenreally they should be happy and looking forward to a new Shinning Force game.
You have to wonder at SEGA sometimes, can they do anything right ???.
I’m not going to buy it, and I doubt I’ll play it unless the opportunity presents itself… all signs point towards it not being worth both my time and money. Maybe Geoffrey will get it, as he already owns a PS2. After seeing the videos, and hearing how the combat sounds from other people who have played it, I don’t feel particularly happy about the “deeper” gameplay of Shining Force Neo.
I felt that Panzer Dragoon Saga was a step forward for the series in terms of story telling and tactical combat. Considering that it was a spin off, I think Team Andromeda surprised a lot of us with its quality. The problem is, Shining Force Neo is changing the meaning of the series itself by changing the definition of the word “Force”, and it’s not even a spin off (Neo means new in Greek, which strongly suggests that this is Sega’s new direction of the series from now on).
Anyway, I don’t believe Team Andromeda made Panzer Dragoon Saga because RPGs were mainstream; I believe they made it because they wanted to conclude the trilogy in an epic, groundbreaking way.
I know people who have played it(Including my cousin) and they have all said it’s a good game. But not a good SHINING FORCE game. They also said for a game price they wanted more then being a good game and that’s the problem. Sega overall isn’t justifying the price of their games no more.
But it sounds like your talking about a different interview because i do remember this rumour of a game called KNIGHT N’ KNIGHT,the CLOCKWORK KNIGHT rpg that Magic box reported over two years ago. But i dunno where they got there infomation from. The fact that SHINOBI appeared on the PS2 after this interview and that SOR is getting a makeover via the SegaAges label may mean that these games will get brand new updates down the line.

Which is what Sega use to stand for before the end of the DC,creating games in a new and groundbreaking way to get the best possible experience. it’s no wonder really that sega’s current decline started with the fall of the Dreamcast. They seem to be a puppy lost without a kennel.
The problem is too many fans have given Sega the benefit of the doubt for far too long only to have their intial negative judgement proven right each and every time. Sega is in no position to piss off their fanbase like they did back when they were producing home hardware. Most fans are refusing to purchase Sega products that isn’t up to standard and are not what the franchise represents. Sega can’t afford to pissing their customers off forever. It’s not a coincidence that Sammy side of things made a whole lot more money than the sega side of things at this fiscal year report. They continue this route Sega will end up out of the game for good.
Spot on. SEGA pissed off even thier loyal fanbase this past year. And thier refusals to port the like Out Run II SP, VC III, Ghost Squad or make a decent Ages range, or Sonic game doesn?t help matters.
Seen the next TATIO and Midway next classic range ?. That?s how to do a classic range SEGA JP. Not this 2500 bulls8t you feed us
I’ve said this before: at any given point, there are possibly tens, maybe even hundreds of various designs/ideas/whatevers floating around any given company in varying stages of completion. There is a whole obstacle course that each concept must go through in order to even make it to the prototyping phase. Just because someone said that they’re working on an idea or concept does not mean it is actually being made.

Man i remember dreaming that Streetfighter 2 would come out on megadrive only to Nintendo to dash that hope(even though it eventually came out for it) never did i think i would hope sega bring out VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 for the DC and to have it dashed by Sega themselves. A game that everyone wanted to play and it was a Sega title. Sheez. This year Sega has to come through for their fans and i think they’re starting to realise what damage they have done recently in the last threee years of lame ducks in a period where a lot of Sega fans were unsure about the future and sega didn’t really put them at ease. I think the E3 movie was a right step but i want something more tangiable like some games that are a reflection of how great Sega can be and are.

That fair enough I’ve only ever seen Overworks say that it was in the pre-production stages.
But what about the games like Illinois and Clockwork Night RPG (and all the rest) which I seen SEGA confirm to be in production, only for us to nevber hear of them again. Why get our hopes up.
Illinois was supposed to be this massive SEGA production and Hitmaker staff were flying out to Illinois for various research.
We?ve heard or seen noting since and SEGA said this game was coming out in 2004.
Most of us are SEGA fans on this board, but surly even you can see SEGA name is mud these days. The casuals couldn?t careless about SEGA, and more and more SEGA is disappointing it loyal fanbase.
It can?t even get the ages range right for crying out loud.
A system 32, Model, 1/2 collection discs would just clear up at retail. But no SEGA Japan can?t see that.
I bought the Decathlete Ages port, and it?s so bad its untrue. The new animation patters are just laughable much like the game its self (The only good thing was the SEGA towel and mug).
Shame too as the Saturn version still to this day is a bloody classic .
How’s the monkey at SEGA Japan that thought it be great to not make Money ball Deluxe LIVE (a game that was crying out for LIVE play). Still insaying that SEGA can’t get the LIVE part right these days
Then the game that a lot of SEGA fans are crying out for (and a game that is so SEGA) looks like to remain Arcade only (OutRun SP) and to makes matters worse they can?t even update Shinning Force right.
SEGA needs to wake up, and start fighting back soon. Or the Arcade is the only place people will care about SEGA games
And a lot of decent arcade games from sega aren’t being ported like KEY OF AVALON which already has a sequel. OUTRUN SP may be aiming for the PS3 to maximise the profit that OUTRUN 2 missed out on in Japan and to some degree in the west as well. But VIRTUA COP 3 is way overdue.
Team andromeda your talking about CARBONDALE as that was the town they were basing the game on so a lot of Segalites just dubbed the project after the game. From the description i think it may be ALIEN SYNDROME ONLINE as it has a few horror/alien elements in it and it is supposed to be a MMO shooter.
But a lot of games are missing from Sega and if they openly speak about them in such a way then i believe that they are making these games or as TA has said what’s the point in prepping people’s hopes up? Sega is aggresivily denying this SONIC ONLINE booha that’s crept up after some info from a website but it does look like something with Sonic of an online nature is being planned.
I believe that ARCADIA was in line as a new series of RPGs for Sega.
Sega is showing signs of coming out of the huge grave they have dug for themselves. I am still a very loyal Sega fan, even though the games have sucked for these past 6 years…but come on, being forced out of the hardware bizz would do that to anyone; Christ, if it were Nintendo or Sony who were forced to be in the same situation, they would still be in a recovery phase, and that is precisely where Sega is right now: a recovery phase. It may take a little longer for them to recover, especially since they keep shifting all of their development teams around (bad move - this is the initial reason why the games coming from Sega, as of late, suck so damn much), but when they do finally come out of their rut, the games are going to be absolutely phenomenal and light years ahead of the competition…just like they used to be in the past.
And the new Panzer Dragoon in development, which will be announced in mid 2006, is going to blow everyone away, and the faith that was lost in Sega from its loyal fans will be restored. For now, that’s all I will say about the subject.
