I have always had a poor opinion of GamePro. Don’t believe everything you read:
gamespot.com/xbox/action/otogi/index.html
8.4 from Gamespot. Not a bad review, notice lower on the page that the reader reviews give Otogi a 9.2, and even Gamepots “Tilt” rating is a 9.
Xbox IGN gave Otogi a similiar score, 8.3 out of 10 and again the readers gave it a 9.

Souds like a solid game to me, i have heard good impressions from people who imported last year.
The game must be somewhat decent as its getting a sequel that is supposed to come out in Japan this year!
Well I never had a real problem with gamepro’s ratings and they were pretty excited about the game before they got the review version so I don’t see why they would trash it for no reason now.
And ofcourse I don’t believe anything I see written and you shouldn’t either.
Especially reader reviews since you don’t even know if the guy writing it is a real gamer or plays games 10 minutes per week and goes wow at every neat special effect he sees etc or whatever…
Anyway as with any game, you can’t be sure until you play it yourself for a certain period of time…
I just dont understand why GamePro would give the game such a low score. Its contrary to everything i have read. Anyway i think i’ll give Otogi a try at some point. At least a rental. It only retails for $39.99 which is an excellent price for a game.
I heard various comments of people who loved it and say it’s a must!
A dude on GameFAQs recommended me this over KOTOR, so it must be good!
Just buy it, it’s GREAT FUN!!!
I’ve re-aquired my job at GAME and I’m telling everyone to at least try it. Infact the first sale on the day of the game’s release was Otogi!
Otogi is a fine game. I have played the hell out of it. It has a really balanced rock paper scissors style of gameplay similar to Eternal Darkness only by the three house rule. That is. One house beats another house, and you use weapons that lean towards one house or the other in conjunction with magic that is found or bought after each mission. Any mission can be replayed for a chance to find any new or special weapons or items. It is also an RPG. Ya gain levels. It’s fantastic. It’s cheap now. I got it for less than twenty dollars.
I own the game and I promis you its GREAT!!
GETS PROPA HARD THOUGH ;p
Trust me the game has everything its another hit ;p
I like Otogi, personally. It’s a lot of fun though the chick that commands you around sounds a little weird…
Wow, talk about mega thread revive. Well anyway, I enjoyed Otogi quite thoroughly as well (despite the frustrating last level and boss). I wouldn’t read much into what Gamepro (or NTSC-UK) says about the game, it’s almost more of a niche action game that some people won’t like, but most will enjoy. I’ve beaten it twice, and will probably play it again every couple months while I wait for Otogi 2 to be released (comeon Sega, bring over Otogi 2!).
Oh, and one of the things that I was VERY suprised about is that the English voices were actually better than the Japanese ones overall! The princess’ voice is a little less interesting in English, but otherwise it’s one of the few games I’ve played like this that actually manages to have very good English voices (flashes back to Onimusha and Dynasty Warrios…shudder)
O.TO.GI is 1 of the best action games I’ve ever played.
The game is sheer class, an I just love he music.
I also have O.TO.GI part II. And you will not believe what the X-Box is throwing around he screen.
I lost count of the amount of enemis on the screen at some parts.
Don’t listen to that sad review. O.TO.GI is a game that western developers can only every dream of matching (art wise).
It’s a master piece.
Welcome back TA.
Thanks mate,
It’s great to be back
I, too, am playing through Otogi 2 right now. It’s phenomenal. I was initially a little disappointed with the reduced number of weapons, but the 5 additional characters more than makes up for it.
The graphics aren’t even in the same league as the first. It’s impressive.
Unfortunately, it’s still basically the same game, but it’s like the first one on fire, hurtling into Earth’s atmosphere at 3000 miles per hour…
I hope Otogi 2 comes to PALcountry soon, because the japanese version doesn’t run well on a european Xbox. The cutscenes get out of synch pretty fast.

What are you kidding the Graphics in O.TO.GI II are amazing. Way better than the 1st. The new Filter effects looks great. And the new mud and grass effects are unbelievable (Level 2 for example). Music isn?t as good as the 1st game though. Other wise the game its much better.
And as a nice Brucie bonus you get the 1st game free, when you buy O.TO.GI II. Now you can’t get much better than that.
But Otogi 2 ain’t out in europe yet right?
Yeah its Jp only.
I bought Otogi 1 today…
Playing it as I type…
