Azel & Edge; Azel’s Epilogue; and related. Clarification. (J)

Hello! It’s off topic, but I’ve prepared a big text, about differences between the Japanese and English versions of Panzer Dragoon Saga.
But I can’t upload it anywhere here, because I’m a new user. Where can I share it?

Table of contents:

  1. Relationships between Azel and Edge
    1.1. Interviews; in-game text comparison
    1.2. Non-verbal information
    1.3. Azel’s Epilogue
  2. Azel and Craymen
2.1. Interviews, overall information, in-game information
2.2. An unfinished (?) drone becomes a human
    2.3. Craymen’s coat
  3. Orta’s father

I think there is some useful information.

For example, scripts in Azel’s Epilogue are basically the same.

And drones in the Japanese version of Panzer Dragoon Saga are called
“ドローン” (dorōn), literally “drone”, not demi-humans.
But they are called demi-humans, “亞人” (ajin), in Panzer Dragoon Orta.
And there is more information about Azel’s unfinished state.

Hi @Nickolay, that sounds interesting! You could just paste the text into forum post(s) or if it’s too long upload into Dropbox/Google Drive and link to it here. Welcome to the community.

This text was initially prepared as a forum topic, but because of the character limit,
I’m uploading it as a .docx file:

A part of this text, about Azel’s Epilogue:

『It’s believed that the English script in Azel’s Epilogue is completely different from the Japanese one.

USGamer asked Yukio Futatsugi about issues with translation of ending; his answer:
“While I don’t think that would be possible, one thing I do remember from the localization that—I was there when we started and towards the end Takeshi-san took over for me—was there were spots that were changed in localization. There was an American fella who told me that such a minute expression will not communicate well in English. So we did change parts like that. But if there were parts in the American release of Saga that are still in Japanese, that’s probably just a bug”.

This is already suspicious.

If Azel wasn’t searching for Edge, then where was she going to? What was An’jou saying? What is happening in this cutscene?

Japanese text:
…西に行く?
やめた方がいい
攻性生物は減ったが, 風が激しい
命を捨てに行くようなもんだ

なあ, そこまでするほどの奴なのか?
あんたの探してる人って
あんたも, その人もゾアの街に
由縁があるんだろ?
せっかくあの戦乱を生きのびたんだ…
それなのに…

なあ,
この砂漠を越えたとこで街を造ってる
あんたも来ないか?
人手はいくらあっても足りないんだ

Translation:
「…Going west?
You better to stop
There are less aggressive creatures, but the wind is severe
You will be just giving up your life

Hey, is he really worth it? That one you are looking for
And you, and that man, you both have a connection to the town of Zoa, right?
You’ve lived through this war…
And still… [i.e. “And still you are not together”]

Hey, we are building a town beyond the desert
Won’t you come, too?
No matter how much manpower you have, it’s never enough」.

So, the scripts are basically the same in the Japanese and the English versions, just minor edits. Azel went searching for Edge, risking her life.』

It’s been several days since I uploaded this text.

Was it helpful?

Also, I apologize if my style was too straightforward…

This is a great document, really detailed! I only just read through the whole thing, but really enjoyed it and agree with most of the conclusions. I didn’t realise Shella was killed, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that next time I play through Saga.

We’ll look at putting this on the Panzer Dragoon Legacy website soon.

One thing I wasn’t sure about was this part:

Translation:
「I see… You must be a cross-species between a human, computerized in the world circuit, and a demi-
human’s genetic group」
[Note: I don’t fully understand what that “遺伝基” (genetic group) means. I think it just means that Edge
is “computerized”, but human, and Azel is a demi-human, and then the term “cross-species” includes
this. But there are no implications, as far as I can see, that she just used his data, and it seems like
they’ve really met].
So, maybe Edge was trapped in Sestren after Saga, and Azel found him there…

In the English translation, the word “fruitless” is used by Azel to describe her search, implying that Azel never found him. How does this factor into your conclusion about Azel and Edge possibly meeting up?

Thank you very much, @Solo_Wing ! I’m glad it was so helpful!

As far as I understand, Shella’s corpse is the smallest one that is lying near the Stronghold exit.

About meeting up of Azel and Edge. Honestly, I’m not sure myself… My conclusion is based on what the Japanese developers usually say in the interviews (judging by their words, Azel found Edge), and on what Abadd said.

As far as I understand, Abadd’s phrase is purely about Orta being a cross-species, and he just underlined that Edge is computerized, but he is a human, and Azel is not computerized, and she is a demi-human. Human and demi-human, - different genetic groups. And if it is so, it must be that they’ve met.

I’m not sure how Azel’s phrase correlates with it. In the Japanese version she stopped her phrase, as if she wanted to say something else, so maybe there is something between the lines.

Maybe there are more clues in the Japanese Encyclopedia, but I can’t check it out.

Also, I’ve overlooked:

Edge – a journey without a destination;
Azel – a journey without the answers.

If you have any questions about other parts of the text, ask, please.

Also, I’m planning on gradually posting other translations from Saga, - dragons and enemy descriptions (the most important ones, at least) and full dialogues, at least from the second part of the game, after Zoa.

Damn, Shella died? That’s pretty sad. What part of the translation mentions this? Nevermind I found in the document where it was mentioned…

That would be fantastic. I would love to post these on Panzer Dragoon Legacy as well, in the translations sections of the site. The translations will be useful for referencing in the wiki too.

After defeating her, {dragon’s name} also obtained transforming abilities.
Is it just a coincidence?」

Notes

There is only one description for all classes per dragon model.

Edge doesn’t use any pronouns towards the dragon in dragon descriptions.

Edge doubts that Solo Wing forms are the true forms of his dragon.

Valiant Wing may be “Variant Wing”, and then “variant” may be for “variation”, since it is the first form that has transforming abilities. It is logical, but I’m not sure about it, since in the Japanese version it’s officially translated as “Valiant Wing”.

Gigralyph (Haishu) is male and Gigra (Haiga) is female.

Dragon Classes names on type selection screen.

Basic Wing - 素体 – Base/Prime Body or Form

Normal Class - 標準型 – Normal/Standard Class

Defense Class - 防御型 – Defense Class

Attack Class - 攻撃型 – Attack Class

Agility Class - 機動型 – Agility/Mobile Class

Spiritual Class - 心技型 – Spiritual Technique Class

Light Wing - 究極形態 – Ultimate Form

[Note: 型 may be translated as “type”, but “class” is an official translation in the Japanese version, and these words are synonyms in this case].

About seekers’ designations.

Zadoc, about the Town of Zoa:
街から来た、パエットという男だが…
独力で空中船を組み上げたそうだな
彼には「調整士」の素質がありそうだ

Translation:

「A man from the town, named Paet…
I heard he assembled an airship all by himself
He seems to have the talent of “Adjuster”」.

Jared, in the first dialogue with him in the Seekers’ Stronghold, says not that he is a weapon smith, but that he is “Adjuster”: “ここじゃ「調整士」だけどな”, - 「Here, however, I’m “Adjuster”」.

Ladha introduces herself as 「守人」 - “Guardian”, and in the dialogue with Shella she says that the reason, why Shella is worried about Azel, must be Shella’s blood (i.e. potential) of “Guardian”.

So, “Guardian” seems to be a designation for spiritualists and medical personnel.

All phrases when Shella is in Ladha’s room.

FAR 1.
Ladha: いい子だから、もう少しお待ち
あの子は、大事なお話の最中なんだよ
Shella: … … …

Translation.
「Ladha: You are a good girl, so wait a little longer
That girl is in the middle of an important conversation
Shella: … … …」

FAR 2.
Ladha: そんなに、あの子が気になるのかい?
(Shella nods)
Ladha: そうかい…
「守人」の血のせいかねえ

Translation.

「Ladha: Are you worried about that girl so much?
(Shella nods)
Ladha: I see…
It must be because of the blood of “Guardian”」

NEAR 1, Ladha:
あんた達も、この里の子になるかい?

Translation.

「Ladha: And you two, will you also become the children of this village?」

[Note.
More literal translation:
「You too, will you become the children of this village?」
“You” here is about Edge and Azel: あんた (“you”) + pluralizing suffix 達].

NEAR 2, Ladha:
しかし… ありゃ、変わった子だね
旧世紀の子は、みんなああなのかい?

Translation:

「Ladha: But… Oh, she is a strange girl
Do all children from the Old Century look like that?」

----

Ladha doesn’t say anything about Shella’s father and her muteness, so maybe Shella was not mute at all, and the reason for her behavior may be something else. Maybe it is because of her father’s death, but just implied, maybe she is just shy, or maybe she has some disorder. Or it may be because of her blood of “Guardian”/spiritualist.

“Quester” - 「探索兵」, may be translated as Explorer/Searcher/Investigator, or, more literally, Exploring/Searching/Investigating Soldier.

“Compiler” - 「編み人」, - is “Compiler”, the same.

Seekers’ Stronghold is “シーカーの里”, - “Seeker’s Village”.

Lathum description

ズースー

砂の海を移動する島としか言いようのない奴だ。
空中戦艦でもなければ、こいつと対等に戦うことはできないだろう。
ガッシュが倒し方を教えてくれなかったら、僕らもどうなっていたことか… 。

Translation:

「Zusu

This thing can be described only as an island moving through the sea of sand.
Unless there is an aerial warship, it seems to be impossible to fight with it on equal terms.
What would have happened to us if Gash didn’t tell how to defeat it?.. .」

These translations are great - thanks for posting them here. Do you have any preference as to how I structure them on the website? Or just as seperate pages in logical groupings?

So then what are Questers exactly? Are they just resource gathering soldiers? Like they go out to unknown areas like hunters to gather food and supplies for the Seekers? Or could they be more along the lines of Archeologists of ancient technology? Helping to discover secure and defend and recover ancient artifacts for the stronghold?

Thank you very much, @Solo_Wing! I’m glad it is useful!

Maybe structure it in logical groups, like “Dialogues in Seekers’ Stronghold”, and there sub-categories “Dialogue with {somebody}”, something like this. But what to do with bits of additional information outside of the dialogues…

Maybe make bigger categories, like “Dialogues”, “Enemy Data”, etc., and then sub-categories there.

Just so it will be logically structured and easy to navigate.

It seems like they are all-arounders: they go to unknown areas, gather all needed supplies, artifacts and intelligence, and also they act as soldiers (at least some of them, who are capable of fighting).

But it is not that strict, I guess, they all do what they can. Jared, for example, was placed in Zoa basically as a spy, but he is “Adjuster”.

That makes sense. So, they are like the Seeker version of normal Hunters then, but with a broader intelligence and understanding of ancient technology.

All dialogues with Zadoc

FAR phrase 1, before the introduction:

Edge: (調べものをしているようだ)

Dialogue 1.1; introductory dialogue

Zadoc: ドラゴンの少年よ…

Edge: …あなたは?
Zadoc: 私は「編み人」ザドクだ
旧世紀の研究を行っている
まずは、これを受け取ってほしい

(A book acquired “ランディレポート”)

Zadoc: かつて、ドラゴン乗りだった男の記録だ
彼は、この里を率いたシーカーであり…
ガッシュの師でもあった
Edge: どうして、それを僕に…
Zadoc: 君に託されるべきものだからだ
彼と同じ、ドラゴン乗りの君にな

(After the dialogue with Gash)

Zadoc: … … …
ガッシュから、話は聞いたかね
Edge: うん…
でも、いきなりあんなこと言われても…
Zadoc: そうか
まあ、無理もないだろうな
君に渡した書物にも書いてあるが…
君のドラゴンには、塔を破壊する力がある
我々が君を監視していたのも、そのためだ
だが、塔は世界中に散らばっている
その全てを破壊するには、おそらく…
数百年以上の時を要するだろう
Edge: そんな…
Zadoc: しかし、彼女の存在が状況を変えた
彼女の力を使えば、おそらく…
Edge: アゼルのことか?
アゼルに何をさせるつもりなんだ?
Zadoc: セストレンへの道を開いてもらう
彼女になら、それができるはずだ
Edge: セストレン…?
Zadoc: この世ならぬ道で塔とつながり
全ての塔を統べる魂の器…
旧世紀の記録に、そう記されている場所だ
Edge: ガッシュは、そこを攻めるつもりなのか…
Zadoc: そうだ
彼女が、ドラゴンをセストレンに導き
ドラゴンが、セストレンを破壊すれば…
全ての塔は、一瞬で死に絶える

Translation.

「Zadoc: The dragon boy…
Finally, I was able to meet you
Edge: …And you are?
Zadoc: I am “Compiler” Zadoc
I am performing researches on the Old Century
First of all, I need you to take this

(A book acquired “ランディレポート”, - “Lundi Report”)

Zadoc: It is a record from a man, who was a dragon rider
He was the seeker who led this village
He also was Gash’s mentor
Edge: Why are you giving this to me?..
Zadoc: Because it should be entrusted to you
Like him, you are also a dragon rider

(After the dialogue with Gash)

Zadoc: … … …
Did Gash explain you everything?
Edge: Uh-huh…
But even if explained, this is all so sudden…
Zadoc: I see
Well, I think it is not unreasonable
It is also written in the book I gave you…
Your dragon has capabilities to destroy the Tower
That’s why we had been watching you
But the Towers are scattered throughout the world
And to destroy them all, it probably…
May take several hundred years, I think
Edge: It cannot be…
Zadoc: However, her presence has changed the situation
Using her powers, maybe…
Edge: You mean Azel?
What are you planning to make Azel do?
Zadoc: To open the path to Sestren
She is expected to be able to do this
Edge: Sestren…?
Zadoc: The vessel of the soul that is linked to the Towers with unworldly passages
And controls all Towers
This is how this place is described in the records of the Old Century
Edge: Is it what Gash is planning to attack?..
Zadoc: That’s right
If she leads the dragon to Sestren,
And the dragon destroys Sestren, then…
All Towers will die in an instant」

[Notes.

“Lundi Report” is actually “Randi Report”, - Lundi is Randi in the Japanese version.

“It cannot be” may also be translated as “Impossible” or “Unbelievable”.

Sestren is the vessel (the place) of the soul (Sestren entity itself); “unworldly passages” are basically “astral passages”].

Translation.

「Edge: (This book is…)
(A record about the Tower)
Zadoc: Take it with you
It may be useful」

[Note.

I’m not sure, but maybe “Sukiado・Opusu” is something like a second temporary given name, while 「影の目」 (“kage no me”), “Shadow Eye”, is a designation.

In the beginning of the game Gash introduces himself as Sukiado・Opusu Gash (written with double hyphen as “スキアド゠オプス゠ガッシュ”), not as 「影の目」.

Gash also said it was his real name, the same as in the English version.

And when you open Lundi Report, it is named “スキアド・オプス・ランディの書”, - “The book of Sukiado・Opusu・Lundi”.

It may be some sort of a mark for other seekers, that this is the leader, but for others it may not mean anything].

ウルの地下深くに、その生成施設がある

Translation.

Probably her destination is Uru
Edge: Why?
Zadoc: Uru is the spring of the world, and in the same time…
It is the birthplace of drones

Seemingly, its mission was to defend the ships of the Old Century.」

[Note.

“Resurrected” may also be translated as “revived”.

“Form” may be translated as “state”.

More literal translation of the second sentence:

「Defending the ships of the Old Century, - that was its mission, seemingly」].

[Note. As far as I understand, Edge does not ask himself if the pup is the child of his dragon, but just in general, if this creature is a baby dragon].

Day 3; the dragon pup is running around (2)

FAR: (こいつ、どうして旧世紀の船の中に…)
NEAR: (こっちが気になるみたいだ)

Dermot’s Ranch is “ラギ牧場”, - “Lagi Ranch”.

Phrases in Lagi Ranch are also different.

Instead of “#” and “<>” there are “♪” and “★” with the same colors and color transition patterns as in the English version.

Day/night, FAR and NEAR other pups: (♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪)

Day, FAR and NEAR Edge’s dragon: (♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪)

Night, FAR and NEAR Edge’s dragon: (★★★★★★★★★)

Other phrases are almost the same, with just “?” and “!”, and the same transition and blinking patterns as in the English version, but there are only 9 of “?” and “!” on the screen per phrase.

Notes

Dragon crests seem to be “incubators” for dragons (or even maybe for all aggressive creatures that are placed there).

Dragons may be a “cluster soul”: they have a single origin, the Black Dragon (that is shown in the ending of Saga in Sestren), but they have separate different souls, - “shards” of the Black Dragon’s soul, - and they have separate different bodies.

The “shard” that became Lagi was inside Shellcoof.

The “shard” that became the Blue Dragon stayed in the crest in the Forest of Zoah after the events of the first game.

The third “shard” entered the dragon crest, which is in the underground ruins of the Excavation Site, and became Basic Wing.

And it seems there is another “shard”, the 4th dragon, - Light Wing. This “shard” was somewhere near D-Units, waiting for them all to be collected.

In the ending of Saga, the Black Dragon shows all his “faces”, and Light Wing is always shown, no matter if he was unlocked or not, followed by Arm Wing, as if it is a separate entity.

If this is true than the dragon is not one or two entities but many shards from the same Heresy Program. And the dragon crest’s are a way for it to grow a body, as well as subsequent new bodies…
