Virtual On

Reading G Duke’s site is quite intresting, in reterospect Sega could have done it had the Japanese department not tried to micromanage SoA, and, in 1994 “stop the Sony dark horse before it even left the starting gate.”

No so much a dark horse in the end but a Nightmare…

Well, here I am with another counterpoint (surprise, surrpise!):

SOJ has always (to my knowledge) micromanaged SOA. So all of Sega’s successes and failures can be attributed to them. In fact, had SOJ not micromanaged SOA, the Genesis arguably never would have succeeded, either. =\

Maybe, it works to ways I guess.

Reading about the Sega CD and the Lieberman witchhunt against Sega (wan’t he a Democratic candidate for President last year?) althought Nintendo got short term games for having kid friendly non-violent games, it the end the whole saga, and the different Mortal Kombat version have done nothing but hurt Ninetndo in it’s struggles against Sony these days.

Damn Temjin nuts. Live a little :stuck_out_tongue: Fei Yen was probably the toughest opponent besides (the initial fight with) Jaguarandi, though she was a bit erratic; sometimes you could kill her in seconds. She was nastiest against the hefty guys though (Raiden, and to an extent Dorkas - Jag could have problems, but normally he could kill her before she got far enough away).

Nope.
The bulky characters I just found funny, like Raiden. He was the last before Z-gradt yet he was perhaps one of the easiest out of all of them. For me anyway. Yet I found for people who used characters with low defence (such as Viper II) heavy characters could desimate them.
His name escapes me now, but he has homing missles and his level is an open grassland. Well if the Viper II is hit just twice with those homing missles (his basic standard weapon) he was a gonna :anjou_wow:
Pah. Raiden was never a problem for V2. Belgdor’s missiles were occasionally a pain, but homing was so much better

Woah… can’t someone save the site before it disappears?

Tell me there isn’t really a game called Happy Hamster Party 4. PLEASE.
Forgot to answer this one. No, there isn’t a Happy Hamster Party 4. But, I’ve seen games/concepts that are pretty damn close :anjou_love:

Here’s a question posted to all of you: Do you like Virtual On only? Or mech/mech-battle games in general?

And either way, explain your thoughts on the subject

I liked Virtual On, but it wasn’t something I’d go out and buy. The genre typically doesn’t interest me to be honest. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Does Anubis: ZOE count as a mech game? Cause that game rocked the boat.

Is that the GBA game? I suppose technically it’s a mech game, but not really what I was after =\

No, the GBA game was Fist of Mars and I never played it. The PS2 sequel, Anubis (released in the U.S. as “The 2nd Runner”) was a high speed robot action game. Not a traditional mech game, but badass nonetheless.

Oh, right. 2nd Runner. Yeah, that counts.

So, what about it did you like?

I wans’t really intrested on this topic since I never played the game and everyone was talking about this or that feature but once I saw this topic stretching itself and seeing Abadd “leaving the crime scene” agehn and agehn I knew a debate was taking place :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha… No debate here (well, at least not now). Just… uh… “collecting information.”

Oh, right. 2nd Runner. Yeah, that counts.

It was a breath of fresh air from the slow and clumsy mech sims like Armored Core. Combat was so immensely satisfying in that game that the short length and horrible VO didn’t really matter. Definately a classic.

Yo Gehn, do you purposefully spell again as “agehn” in your posts? You know, as a reference to your screen name. It’s cute.

Yes, I do :>
Believe it or not it’s instinctive now.

Gun Griffon 1 & 2 rocked on the Saturn. I think there’s a PS2 sequel now, I don’t know if it’s any good.

I don’t think one can simply say “I like mech games” tho since mechs are more of a theme and any kind of games can be created using it… From Turn Based Strategy/RPG games (Front Mission series) to fast action frag fests (Gun Griffon) to anything you can imagine really…

Well, the reason why is because I wanted to know how people felt about mechs as a theme, not necessarily as it pertains to specific gameplay. Some people have an aversion to mech games, but others don’t. I’m just curious as to what specifically it is about mechs in general that people are attracted to. Or why they choose specific mech games over others. Is it the genre? The style? Or simply the quality of the title?

There’s also different styles of mech themes tho :stuck_out_tongue:
Some people think of the likes of Mechwarrior with its ‘tank’ like mechs while others instantly drool over the thought of some super agile japanese anime style mech…

Anyway… why the interest … is there a certain game we should know of by a certain developer coming? :anjou_happy:

What would give you the idea that I would be privy to such information?

Or, if I were, what would give you the idea, given my usual demeanor on these here boards, that I would give you a straight forward answer? :anjou_love:

MechAssault/MechWarrior brings up an interesting question. In your eyes, do you view those as the same category (thematically) as, say ZOE? How about Armored Core? How about Virtual On?

The idea that “mechs” is a general term is stupid.I’m sick of people copying ideas from each other.
