I thinkyou only play as Sonic in Black Knight. Though I think bosses like Knuckles become playable after defeating them. Maybe.

Well it was true for the last Wii Sonic game and it was all the better for it .
And I’m just don’t like or will ever get used to Sonic carrying weapons . Black Knight looks decent , but its not SONIC for me at all . And I didn’t like Sonic the Fighters, Shadow for much the same reasons .
It just looks so wrong
If I had my way they would just kill Sonic. As far as I’m concerned they (Sonic Team) got better results when they came up with new IPs. Give Sonic a breather already. Less games.
I hear making money is the first priority of any company, anywhere. Yes, Sonic Team was good when it came up with new IPs fairly often, but Sonic sells units and units pay for the company to continue running. Hell, look at Nintendo’s marketing strategy for the last few years games wise and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s really the same as how Disney keeps regurgitating poorly thought out sequels based on already established characters.
I think the point really is Sonic Unleashed is 60% a bloody brilliant game . If Sonic Team could once and far all fix the Hub World system (or just get rid of it) Tighten up the Werehog parts a little bit (if we must have them) Then Sonic Team are on to a winner .
The level design, the skill in making levels that vast, that Huge and that fast , shows the Team are brimming with talent . If they had a few more months and time to get and nail every part of the game right . Then this would be a AAA game
What Sonic Unleashed is, is a HUGE step for Sonic Team getting a Sonic 3D right again . I mean the Sonic level are really out of this world, one can not but be impressed
Yes, because Billy Hatcher was a fantastic game
Actually, for the hour or so I played it, it didn’t seem bad.

you know, actually kinda liked billy hatcher, if you can get past the cover its pretty fun…(puts up flame sheild)
I was just taking a bit of a piss - it’s not a horrible game by any means. It’s just not very deep, which likely accounts for why it didn’t sell very well. That, and the guy is in a chicken suit.
I’m glad you guys are enjoying Sonic Unleashed. I will give it a try, eventually.
I think Sega should try bringing back playable characters like Tails and Knuckles, but with similar play styles to Sonic. In Sonic 3 and Knuckles, the levels were the same when you played as all three characters, but there were different routes that you could take depending on what “powers” your character had - Knuckles could bash through walls and Tails could fly to hidden areas. Adding these characters tripled the total play time, while ensuring that the gameplay wasn’t too different and still focused on speed.
So Abadd what do you think of Sonic Unleashed , you played it yet mate ?
Played through the first 4 stages (day, night, night, day), and it’s hit and miss. I still firmly believe that Sonic moves way too fast now, but the daytime levels are still good fun. There are less death traps and there are a lot of great looking set pieces to run through. That being said, there are areas that can be extremely frustrating and the QTE bits add no value whatsoever to the daytime levels.
The night levels are… serviceable. Nothing spectacular, but I believe that people wouldn’t be nearly as harsh on them if this weren’t a Sonic game. I can’t necessarily blame people for hating it, though. People aren’t playing Sonic to play the night levels - they want to run fast. So, while the nighttime bits aren’t horrible (well, the camera is horrible, but the action isn’t too bad - just a little too simple), it’s not what people want to be playing.
The cities and hubs are ridiculous, as is the medal collection, as everyone has pointed out. It was super frustrating that I couldn’t go back and replay levels to improve my scores until after I had beaten the 4th level, for example. Why can’t there just be a stage select?
Cool. Now go play the development version of Black Knight and talk about that.

That is the worst part to the whole game . Not only does it slowdown and make the whole process more complex that it needs to be .It’s very hard to work put , what you have to do , or where to go next in order to open up the levels . What is the point in opening up the China level, if you can’t play it, till much latter after you’ve collected more moon or sun things . Its just a mess and must be super hard for small kids to work out , how to play . And kids is where Sonic will gets the biggest sales from imo
I think there’s too many button presses too, when just pressing A button could do most of the attacks, just like in SA. It is a shame though, the Werehog levels aren’t that bad, and the Sonic levels are brilliant fun , and they show there is some real talent in the Team . There’s some stunning moments and some every clever level design in the Daytime levels of China and it looks stunning .
The worst part is the team were on to something here , and its half way there to being the game we all want
I bought the Wii version (oh god! oh god!)
When I catch fire I will let you know.
Ok so far I am actually enjoying the Wii version, there are no Hub worlds at all, they are instead replaced by a kind of point-and-click dialogue section. So you basically just read everything and then the next area is unlocked, voila!
The battle of the night levels in the Wii version bare more than a passing similarity to Phantasy Star Universe’s Seed infected sections, with enemies being nigh identical and the way they are introduced to the level (rising up out the ground, etc)
Although I quite enjoy the night levels, possibly more than the daytime levels.
I played it on the 360… in a games store, so I didn’t spend a huge amount of time with it. Therefore, my opinion of the game may be somewhat limited, and could change if I was given more time to get used to the controls, etc.
From what I played of Sonic Unleashed, I have to say that I was severely disappointed. Not only does Sonic move too fast (when taking into consideration the camera which is constantly repositioning itself), but the controls feel far too floaty. It’s a step up from Sonic 2006 for sure… but that’s not saying much.
The Werehog stages are okay for what they are. I’d put up with them, just like I put up with the Tails and Knuckles stages in Sonic Adventure 2, if the Sonic stages were fun.
The problem is, I don’t feel that I’m in control of Sonic anymore in the recent titles. It doesn’t feel like I’m playing a game, more that the developers were designing the levels as an interactive movie, with gameplay and control secondary to nice graphics and cinematic camera angles.
And that is still my biggest complaint about all recent Sonic titles. I think it’s fine to have sections of gameplay where the speed is taken up a notch just to have that feeling of exhilaration (much like the bridge whale-chase scene in SA1), but it feels like a lot of the skill elements have been taken out of the game.
But SU has some skill elements involved. The skill is to see if you can last the duration of the game without giving in to the urge to chop your fingers off to rid yourself of the dirt.
I think Zero Punctuation summed it up perfectly.
