The director of PDO, also worked on Saga. One of the composers from PDS (Saori Kobayashi) also composed much of the music from PDO. The artists and writers were different (if I’m not mistaken), which can explain some of the differences from the Saturn trilogy in those areas.[/quote]
Well there were a few quite a few new staff brought in for Zwei, and the likes , Ryuta Ueda Takashi Iwade, Kentaro Yoshida worked on the Art Team for on most of the Saturn versions and Orta but I think Ueda started at TA on Zwei .
Really though I don’t get the ORTA hate. Its a bloody classic 3D shooter and by far away the best this gen. I think some are unhappy becasue it’s not SAGA II plain and simple
To me Panzer Dragoon always been 1st and formost a shooter, not a RPG .
What I liked about ORTA is it used the best parts from the 3 previous games and combined them all in one AAA package . To me along with Out Run 2006 , JSRF its by far the best SEGA done this gen.
I’m unhappy because it’s not Zwei 2. Ha. And I’m sure the system it’s on makes no difference to any fan as far as judging the quality of the game goes.
And yes, I’m aware of what Orta means (no, really), though to be honest, with Orta they attempted to close the chapters of the previous games so it was a bit silly to name it like that as the all new beginning will be in the next game, if that ever comes along
Well I guess it was rather silly to name Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, when it was nothing of the sort and in fact a Prequel to the 1st game . If we really want to be clever about a name in titles.
ORTA is the true Panzer Dragoon III in terms of following the classic original. Every thing that made both Zwei and Dragoon is in ORTA to a point . Becasue at the end of the day, at its heart Panzer Dragoon is a rather simple 3D shooter, and Orta is one of the best 3D shooters this side of Zwei .
I’ve been a fan ever since I got a Saturn which was about 1-2 years after it was released. I couldn’t afford a Saturn when it released.
I do remember seeing the first game on a Saturn in a store and it had Panzer Dragoon. The FMV were awesome. I so wanted it. I eventually got it and Zwei and fell in love with them.
As for all this talk about Orta and how some people don’t like it, they were expecting it as an RPG after Saga which was and is still the best PD game even though I’ve never played. I think Smilebit did an awesome follow-up to the series. Sure some stuff was changed. The thing that I hear most is that the design of the ships aren’t Panzerish, but after the Great Fall, you can’t expect them to remain the same. So I think Orta is my favorite PD game and if I’ve played Saga, I would expect it to be the best followed by Orta.
The story of PDO seemed more like an epilogue to the Saturn trilogy, so I agree with you there, but the world itself was definitely meant to represent a new beginning. After the Great Fall a lot of things changed: the climate, the Empire… monsters adapted to these new surroundings too.
I think the PDO team was trying to introduce a new world changed from the Great Fall, but they only got as far as releasing a shooter that takes place in it… not the RPG sequel that they had in mind as well. If two games - a shooter and an RPG - had come out that took place in PDO’s world, I think PDO wouldn’t have stood out so much compared to the original trilogy.
I must admit, I really disliked the Panzer Dragoon series back in 1995. When I first bought my Saturn, I purchased NiGHTS, Daytona USA, and Virtua Fighter 2. But I believe its was part of because I was younger at the time. But now in 2006 i’m currently replaying some of my classic saturn games. I got a chance to play Panzer Dragoon Zwei, and fell in love with it. After completing the game, I’m currently playing Panzer Dragoon Saga. I’ve tried the XBOX version of Otra, hated it. It doesn’t have the feel of a PD game.
