Since when are you a PD fan?

cool welcome :anjou_happy:

i never noticed this topic before…

for me, I played the PDS disk 1 demo that came with SSM
after that I was hooked. Now its my favourite game ever =)

Hey thx for the welcome, and I’ll get to the extended profile sometime Scott. I’ve just been reading through almost all of the mysteries and theories and articles in general right now. Taken as a whole they have easily doubled my existing awareness of the possible significance of the various superficial details given in the games. And corrected many minor, and a few not so minor, errors in my recollections. Most illuminating, and agitating at times. lol

I hope I haven’t completely missed the wave as far as interest in revisiting some discussion and debate is concerned, there are a few issues (impressively few at this point) that are significant to me that I have not seen represented in the articles yet. And some of my persisting assumptions seem decidedly at odds with what seems to be the prevailing schools of thought.

Here’s hoping we get some news for next-gen to get excited about by the holidays, as vain a hope as it sometimes feels.

I’m excited at the moment. XD Today I finally managed to complete my Saturn PD collection with the very first one, and for only 15 euro to boot. XD V-sign

Well, it al started when I was 5 or 6, the Sega Master system 2 was chucked out, and we got a new shiny Sega Saturn, a Package with Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally Championship and Panzer Dragoon Zwei. I fell in love with all three but Panzer Dragoon the most… Then I got Saga… And that was it, Panzer Mad!

I actually bought my Saturn late in life. I was 17. I went to a used game store and bought the system, an analog controller, and Nights into Dreams. Then, after playing Nights I did some research to find the best games for the system. I then proceeded to buy Panzer Dragoon. I thought: great game! After PD I bought Panzer Dragoon Zwei and thought to myself: even better! I then discovered Panzer Dragoon Saga in EGM’s first 100 best games of all time. Now, to my disappointment I could only find PDS on Ebay, and for prices ranging from 120 to 160 bucks. I wasn’t quite ready to go all out and take a chance just yet. The following year (I’m now 18) I finally went for it and bought the magnificent game. From start to finish, it was utter enjoyment and wonder!

The only reason I bought an Xbox was for Panzer Dragoon Orta. I was happy a new incarnation of the series had finally surfaced, but disappointed it wasn’t an RPG. Later on, I sold all my games, except Orta and Shenmue 2. I find it sad that the only game I have worth keeping for Xbox is Orta. I only sold Halo and Halo 2 because I played those games to death.

I got a saturn when I was 6 and I think I got Zwei with it now I wonder whether I ever actually played the first one because my memory is disgusting. I cant even remember key things in the games and I loved each of the games.

So I have been a fan for 8 years. Even though I don’t own a saturn anymore and neither I nor my parents remember what happened to it. Saga Disc 4 got scrached so we probably binned that (and I discovered a year ago it was rare and worth a lot of money :anjou_angry: ). But I remain a big fan of the games and stil haven’t played a game like it since.

Really my Saga disc 4 is also scratched.I still haven’t fixed that (there’s this store where they could polish it for me).

Btw welcome Jimkemon.
Is it me or is the majority of posters around here British?

You should probably get that fixed before it starts to screw the game (mine ended up jamming at some point).

Thanks for the welcome :anjou_happy:

Was Panzer Dragoon more popular in Britain or something that could explain the large amount of british users.

Well yeah My disc 4 doesn’t actually wrok anymore.

Welcome! I think the same of Zwei, Saga and Orta =)

I became a fan ever since I played PDO. I never knew about the other 3 games until I played the 1st and watch the intros and endings in Zwei and Saga in PDO’s Pandora’s Box.

When I played PDO it feels almost flawless. The 1st PD was okay,Zwei is good, and Saga is great, but for me, it feels a little overrated(sorry Saga fans :anjou_sad: )

There’s always a certain had to be there factor when talking about older games. However, as a “cult classic” Panzer Dragoon in general and Saga in particular are by definition almost immune to being considered overrated, since by and large the only people who even care about them are the people who love them.

Case in point, your opinion that Orta is almost flawless Light Wing. Many (even on this site) will disagree but I doubt anyone would ever actually label it “overrated”, because every single Panzer game is balanced by just as much underappreciation as overratedness.

So it’s all good, Orta is not exactly my fave PD game but I’m always super happy when people like you prove that PDO is so good it can win brand new fans on it’s own. And the very fact that every one of the 4 games are considered the “best” by many people indicates how excellent the series is as a whole.

I love the first three. I’ve been playing since the first game came out, and to be honest, I wasn’t immediately hooked. Funny, how some of the best games, the ones I always come back to, and the ones that I establish the closest bond with are games which aren’t immediately appealing to me.

Like Ico, SotC (this one grew on me in about a day, however.), and Panzer Dragoon. (Zwei, and Saga, admittedly, had me hooked pretty much from the start with their brilliant color schemes and water effects)

Light Wing, perhaps you should give the first three another shot.

The reason that I don’t have the fourth game is because I don’t have an ehcks-backs, plain and simple. My buddy does have a copy of the game, yet I haven’t played enough of it to form a solid opinion yet.

Speaking of Orta, and I have a feeling this has been brought up before, exactly which members of Team Andromeda worked on Orta…and how big of a role did they play in its development?

I can’t answer your question as such, I just tried to find an old XBN article that asked about it but I could only find an echo of the same info. The Smilebit team that worked on Orta had ten Team Andromeda members, and an additional six TA alums had some degree of involvement.

that’s definitely more than I thought.

looks like I’ll be getting an x-box sooner than later, then.

still going to wait until they’re like fifty bucks (if that ever happens), I’ve been wanting to pick up Half Life 2 since my computer is too wimpy to play it.

Sorry about that. It just feels like PDO didnt get some respects as Saga gets.
I personally like PDO because if it havent been for it, I would not be here.

I do think Saga feels overrated(Not like FF7) because even though its rare,Saga is not like the other 3 games. In words, its unique which meant different.

I dont have problems Saga being the golden crown but I remember someone saying this:

PD Saga=best PD Orta=worst

Excuse me,but PDO has a reason: to show that PD series is not really “Dead”

Sorry if this is a complaint.

Saga had a reason. To let you explore the PD world the other games let you see a glimpse of. But that doesn’t make any difference to your experience with it and what you think of it, does it?

Similarly, PDO’s “reason” doesn’t make a difference to how I, or someone else, may think of the game itself. I still consider it the worst PD (except for mini) because to me it felt like the Panzer Dragoon setting was there partially but “washed out”. It just wasn’t as immersing or amazing anymore. I still love Zwei the most.

The director of PDO, also worked on Saga. One of the composers from PDS (Saori Kobayashi) also composed much of the music from PDO. The artists and writers were different (if I’m not mistaken), which can explain some of the differences from the Saturn trilogy in those areas.

sigh I guess I got too mad at Saga.

Al3xand3r,do you know what Orta means? Just because PDO is not too panzerish doesnt mean that its not part of the series. It was meant to be different. Think, what does “Orta” and “new beginnings” mean?

Don’t worry about it Light Wing, Orta gets the most hate of the series for obvious reasons. It’s the only one not on Saturn, many people have (or did have) some level of bias against the XBOX, “it’s not Team Andromeda so it can never be good enough”, the visual style is very different (impossible to please everyone there since the Saturn games left a lot more room for the imagination, and everyone’s imagination is different), and possibly most important…

Saga is the game that sealed the deal for the majority of the most hard-core PD fans, and because of that a lot of people really wanted another RPG or adventure instead of a shooter. PDO didn’t disappoint me at all but this is the way it happens every time a beloved “old-school” game or franchise gets updated. Don’t take it personally.
