this thread is becoming waaaaaaay too much like threads from other forums i know…
note about hardcore games not selling on xbox: hardcore games rarely sell well on anything anymore. shinobi on the ps2 did fairly well but the overwhelming outcry was about how hard it was. i beat shinobi, it was a great game, but it really wasn’t hard… maybe about as hard as gunvalkyrie- which is the type of game where once you actually learn how to play, nothing poses a threat.
so while shinobi sold well on the ps2, that was due to franchise, hype, etc and very little was a result of appreciation from the “hardcore gamer”.
I own all 3 mate. Just saying that if you look at the line of games then it the X-Box that?s getting it?s fair share of bloody FPS, War games, and realistic driving games. Those games are aimed at the old gamer.
When in comparison the bulk of the Cube line up is aimed to the younger gamer. That?s just in general.
Of course there?s kiddy type games the X-Box and some adult type game for the Cube. On balance thought there?s more adult based game on the X-Box
Alright then, we are talking about two totally different things… I was referring to the fact that having blood, violence, etc. doesn’t necessarily make a game mature. You may have to be mature to handle it, but that doesn’t mean the subject matter itself is mature.
But if you are simply going off of the rating of the games, then there are probably more games on X-Box that are rated M.
Actually, while the Cube does have a much broader young audience, it has its fair share of older gamers.
The main difference is the perception of the system itself. Due to the success of games like Halo, gamers that like FPS, shooters, etc. have congregated to the Xbox. In addition, the presence of Project Gotham has also attracted racing fans, just as XBL has attracted online gamers. Age has nothing to do with this, as gamers of all ages enjoy these games. They just “appear” to be more mature because of the more violent and darker themes.
But, if you look at Nintendo’s games, the art style may be more cartoony, but the content can be quite mature. It’s a common misconception that games like Animal Crossing are meant for kids. That’s an adult game by far. It’s far too boring for most kids to play. Metroid Prime? How is that any less “mature” than Xbox games? Resident Evil? Eternal Darkness? There’s plenty of mature titles.
While younger-looking games have a much better chance of success on the Cube (primarily because Cube owners don’t mind that sort of thing… heck, they’re Nintendo fans), it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “kiddy.”
Though, I do feel that I have to congratulate D-Unit on his analytical powers in his first post. Just because there are Sega games on the Cube that sell very well, doesn’t mean that all Sega games will sell very well on the Cube.
i received a message from someone questioning my first statement in the topic. i just thought i’d clear up any confusion there may have been.
i was not telling bomberman to leave the forums. i only wanted to point out that one of their first posts here at twota was essentially a gamecube is better than xbox thread. this is corroborated by their laughable view of the console as well as of the console owners (i also firmly disagree with their view that PD is similar to starfox- perhaps in appearance but the further experience is completely different). anyway, this is a topic for the liberal or holy district wrapped in the guise of a legitimate seeker stronghold subject.
so all i meant in my first statement was that bomberman’s time might be better spent arguing consoles in either the liberal or holy districts- but in truth i would suggest an entirely different forum for that type of discussion.
The GameCube is actually quite a nifty little unit from what I’ve played of it. All the consoles have their strengths and weaknesses, but I can see why some people would prefer the Cube over other consoles. It has what the Xbox and PS2 lack - a ‘video gamey’ first party lineup that reflects the days of Genesis and SNES.
As for the Xbox, the problem with the system is that a lot of the great games are already on other systems. KOTOR, Morrowind, and Shenmue 2 (which are basically the three main RPGs) can also be found on PC and Dreamcast. Even Halo, Microsoft’s flagship title is now on the PC. When I look at my Xbox collection I sometimes wonder why I actually bought an Xbox other than for Panzer Dragoon Orta - most of the games I have for it are already on other systems.
Well Gehn did tell me about some of X-Box’s exclusive games that I had either forgotten about or didn’t know about… I’m not sure how good all of them are; I had heard some of them were just average… But maybe you’d like them ^_^.
If we follow Abadd’s theory you will love them all Mumei since graphics it’s what the gamer (mainly) cares for…
I like the ones (exclusives) I have and it’s good to see that some of them are just something you don’t ordinarilly see in a GC or a PS2.
And yes it’s a pitty that (just as Solo said) good prospects (except for Shenmue 2 of course) have gone to the dark side (PC).That’s what you get for doing a “personal(ized) (computer)console”

Oh shush about the dark side :P. hugs his uber PC
About graphics, most of my favorite games are 8/16 bit games :P.
There’s Ninja Gadian which I wouldn’t mind trying, but apart from Smilebit’s games I can’t actually think of anything else off the top of my head. Since I have a PC that is capable of running a lot of the Xbox’s games at a higher resolution I’m starting to wonder what the point in getting games for a system that won’t nessarcerily be around for that long anyway (if the rumours that Xbox 2 won’t be backwardly compatible are true). PC games are usually cheaper too.
Yes, but those aren’t the type of games you buy a system for… Well most people. They weren’t really critically acclaimed. They had a 80.6 and 74.1 score on GameRankings, respectively. So they are good games, but not ones that most people would run out and buy a system for… Games like Ninja Gaiden, Halo or KotoR are system sellers.
I’m not saying that I don’t like some of the more niche games, but if we are talking about games that would actually get people to buy a system… Those don’t really count.
i don’t know what you guys are arguing over, but there is an important difference between a killer app and a great game. case in point, i bought my xbox for gunvalkyrie.
So you’d consider that to be a killer app? Because if you bought the system for that game, then you would consider that game a killer app… I played Gunvalkryie, but I hated the controls =/. I’d prefer my control schemes to be more intuitive.
But Gun Valkyrie would make me buy it.Not for the mundane peasure in playing it but for the certainty that that system would have games not focused on mainstream.
But the vast majority of the games do focus on the mainstream. For every single system. All the systems have a few niche games that aren’t extremely focused on the mainstream. Not that those games aren’t good; I love some of them.
i suppose it is my personal killer app, but gunvalkyrie is in no other way a killer app. killer apps are the games that generate the most system sales, but rarely can they be considered the best games (by enlightened gamers). doa:xbv was a killer app, but no gamer (not even the mainstream ones) could ever say they thought it was a great game. i just wanted to make sure both of you were using the same terms, though i still don’t know what you guys are arguing over.
and would you say that you felt you really knew how to play gunvalkyrie? i’ve spent a great deal of time with the game and in my opinon, it has the MOST intuitive controls of any game i have ever played. i think the words you were looking for may have been “less different” as in, “I’d prefer my control schemes to be less different.”
