I think Knuckles was by far the best addition to the Sonic world…

Hey now. Knuckles was introduced in Sonic 3 which, combined with Sonic and Knuckles, was arguably the apex of the series. So, I guess you’re technically correct in saying that it went downhill from there, but I think it’s a little harsh to pin it on Knux.
I think it had more to do with a rough transition from 2D to 3D.
PS: Since when does Knuckles have a bloody hat!? Blasphemy!
The big problem with Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes were that you didn’t just get Sonic action.
In Sonic Adventure 2 you essentially had 3 games in one, and the Sonic/Shadow game was good, but shooting and treasure hunting were thoroughly mediocre and interrupted the flow of the game. I’m sure that EVERYONE would’ve prefered more Sonic levels rather than shooting and hunting levels.
Playing as the bad guys was pointless - they were identical to the good guys.
Tails and Knuckles could’ve been in the game, but it should’ve been ala Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where they play like Sonic, but with different attacks, and they could both go different routes just like Knuckles did in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
In Sonic Heroes of course the problem was that you couldn’t just play vanilla Sonic at all, you had to switch to a strong character and a flying charater.
There were other problems with the games, but to me those’re the main problems - lack of pure Sonic action. Sonic Adventure was different, it didn’t feel like the other 5 characters had different games, just that they were a slight twist on traditional Sonic, and it added to the overall grandness of the game.
I didn’t find the voice acting too bad, but I generally have it set to Japanese anyway. In Heroes they talk way too much in the levels though.
And despite what anyone says, I still think that Sonic Adventure and Sonic Battle had great plots. All of the 16 bit games had nice enough plots too really, ones that just did the job and were at least mildly interesting.
