I never liked Gamefaqs anyway.
It’s just advertising.
I don’t get what the big deal is. It’s not like they’ve gone through and changed any info on any of the games in their database.
Dear God, No!
I was hoping for something groundbreaking when I saw this topic.
x_x Meh. I guess we’ve seen this already.
Actually, Penny Arcade brought up the same point on several different occasions, but I have always wondered… Why is it that gamers scream bloddy murder when a game-related website features pervasive advertisements of a specific game, particularly if the game is “mainstream”? (Even though FFXI is pretty damn hardcore, it being an MMO and all, people still view it as mainstream due to its branding.)
So, why is this such a travesty worth noting and worth getting worked up over?
Simple : mainstream just plays for fun. Thus whatever is amde thinking about mainstream is usually dumbed down.
It’s like when you are admiring a painting. If you like Picasso and think he’s a genious you tend to dislike lesser paintings that just don’t have IT…
But the presence of those “lesser” works of art do nothing to detract from the quality of the ones you like.
Why can’t it just be ignored and let the masses have their games, and you enjoy your own? Why is it that gamers say that someone or some website has “sold out” when they’re merely showing advertisements?
I was under the impression that all gamers played because games are fun.

I’m speaking but I’m actually quite neutral.I don’t hate them but it saddens me to see so much advertising for something that doens’t derserves it.
Aitrus: I don’t play just for fun.It has to stimulate my mind.
PS:It doesn’t need to be a puzzle game to stimulate my mind tho.
Well, I kinda posted this as a joke. Anybody who visits GameFAQs knows that there are a hell of a lot of FF ‘fanboys’ there.
Gehn: Have you actually played FFXI? Even many of the non-FF fans that I know speak highly of the game. And what does a game have to do to “deserve” to be advertised? I didn’t know there were requirements for anything to be deserving of advertisement.
Shadow: I was just asking as a general sort of statement. Penny Arcade seems to get a lot of those types of emails, etc. Just out of curiosity, really.

but what if everyone wants a piece of the lesser works of art and nobody buys the greater works of art? then the lesser artist gets rich and lives happily and the greater artist dies of starvation, or worse yet; alters their style to fit what the mainstream desires for the next 15 minutes.
Or the artist makes mainstream games to sell well to make money to make more “real” art.
This isn’t true of just gamers, but of “connosieurs” the world 'round… brands, food, music, games, etc. Whenever something goes mainstream, it instantly loses it’s “edge” to the original fans. For example: punk band “A” has a hardcore underground following. They’re very good. So good, in fact, that they get picked up by a major label. They’re offered a lot of money. They release an album in exactly the same vein and of the same quality as when they were underground. All their old fans claim they “sold out” by going “mainstream” and abandon the band. I just find it fascinating.
I ahven’t palyed FF XI cause i don’t own a PS2 and mainly because I don’t trust most advertising.Neither you or your game needs to be trusted to eb advirtised, that’s a fact.
But it’s sad to see bad games getting big advertisements don’t you agree?
(im not criticizing FF XI directly;just a question)

The thing is I never was a FF fan.
Whenever I see a bad game being advertised, I just think, “Wow. They’re wasting money.” It doesn’t really bother me, persay.
It’s not like their advertising of a bad game prevents a different publisher from advertising a good game.

i’ll definitely agree that that does happen, but if we look at sega… sonic team specifically… their products are not of the same level… they quite frankly have sold out IMO…
Actually, I think we’re mixing up terms.
It’s not that you think Sonic Team has sold out (who would they have sold out to???), but that their quality has dropped. There’s a world of difference.
