Gamefaqs has been invaded!

Doens’t it bother you that good games have less chances?
Actually, I think we’re mixing up terms.

It’s not that you think Sonic Team has sold out (who would they have sold out to???), but that their quality has dropped. There’s a world of difference.
i think it’s both

i think they are definitely targetting a different audience, one that will heap money upon them. for instance, billy hatcher was not aimed at the same fans they had when they released burning rangers. but also, the reiterations of PSO do show a severe drop in quality.

I don’t agree that bad games being advertised makes good games have less of a chance to sell. If the game is good, and is culturally appropriate, the majority of the time, it will sell well.

If the game is good, but covers subject material that is irrelevant to most people, it doesn’t matter what you do, it’s not going to sell.

So, publishers can advertise bad games all they want. They may get a few more people to buy the game, but it’s not going to turn a bad game into a multi-million seller.

On the flip side, it’s up to the publisher to recognize what their good games are, and advertise them.

Well maybe that which mainstream considers irrelevant is what good games are all about!

I dind’t say that. What I mean is that good games don’t get as much advertising cause they are different and thus they are condamned…

I don’t think “mainstream” and “good” are necessarily mutually exclusive, though.

For instance, Metroid Prime, Zelda, Splinter Cell (well, Pandora Tomorrow, at least), etc. are all very good games. But, they’re also all mainstream.

But, I also think Gitaroo Man is a fantastic game, but I play it with the understanding that it is not a game that everyone can enjoy. I applaud the creators for making it, and I treasure the game, but it’s not something I expect to sell tons and make lots of money. It’s a personal enjoyment.

I just wish they would make more mainstream games to make more money to make more games like Gitaroo Man.

That’s the only way it will work =\

It’s just like doing great evil for a good purpose. That’s not good. There are no necessary evils here.

Sega doens’t do that imo.Sega has been doing it rigth ever since it was born. They make good games everytime. When it’s bad you still get the idea that a lot of work wa put into it and it was meant to be good.

Abadd, you make very good points and i agree with all of them i just think there’s something else to it as well.

what makes ffX more culturally relevant than gunvalkyrie? aside from being part of the franchise. say both of these games were released at the same time on the same system and they were done by no-name developers. the mainstream would almost certainly ride ffx to the top of the charts even if it weren’t part of the ff franchise… and gunvalkyrie would get nothin.

You are correct, sir.

FF would still win out over GV. Why?

The majority of people don’t want to pay money for a game just to play a “game.” People love freebie or cheap games like the ones on Yahoo Games and whatnot, but if you’re going to get someone to plop down $50 (here in the US, at least), it better be a more satisfying experience.

One thing you’ll learn about gamers is they’re just naturally more obsessive compulsive than the “average” person. What else drives a gamer to collect every item in a game? Find all the hidden secrets? Master a certain technique?

GunValkyrie is all about mastering the gameplay. There isn’t a whole lot of story to speak for.

FF has always had top-notch graphics (nothing wrong with a little eye candy), character design that appeals to both Western and Eastern audiences, and a story that is (seemingly) deep and epic (not that I agree).

And advertising can make up their mind. That’s why FF advertising is evil…

There are quite a few at Shining Force Central too unfortunately. If you looked up the mainstream definition of “RPG” you’d find Final Fantasy [insert number here] listed underneath it.

I thoroughly enjoy mocking the Final Fantasy fans who dare to visit Shining Force Central (a Sega fansite for crying out loud). Final Fantasy discussion is actually banned there because the admin holds Sony and the Final Fantasy games responsible for Shining Force 3’s incomplete English translation.

When some hapless fool compared Final Fantasy Tactics (a 32 bit Strategy/RPG) to Shining Force 2 (a 16 bit Strategy/RPG) I couldn’t resist tearing apart every single point he brought to bear. It’s unfair to compare two games from two different eras even if they do belong to the same RPG sub-genre.

If the Final Fantasy games represent the future of the RPG genre, then I don’t even want to imagine what horrors await us on the other side of the horizon. Rumour has it that Microsoft is going to buy BioWare and Interplay is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. What will become of my beloved genre? The future’s bright, the future’s Final Fantasy.

What makes you think Microsoft will be a bad thing for Bioware?

The outcome of this depends on how much freedom Microsoft is prepared to grant BioWare. BioWare already makes RPGs that tread a fine line between hardcore and mainstream RPGs anyway. Both Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic lacked the size and scope of the PC Baldur’s Gate games, and were essentially a step backwards for BioWare. I hope they don’t keep stepping back.

Dang it! GAMFAQs have been run over by Final fantasy freaks!!!

 1. I believe MS is denying the rumors.

 2. I think MS realizes that Bioware is selling games because they make good games. MS didn’t step in and force Bunjie to make drastic changes to Halo… I doubt they’d do the same thing with Bioware, if they do end up purchasing them.

 3. Interplay has plenty of issues. They have a successful title or two, but how many bombs in between?

There’s plenty of room in the genre for FF style RPGs and Morrowind/KOTOR style RPGs.

Any step that helps a company learn is a step in the right direction.

I’m not gonna jump into this debate, but to comment on the original topic:

The thing that scares me about this is that gameFAQs seems to be going down a slippery slope of gradually increasing advertisement. GameFAQs has been one of my favorite sites for several years now because it has a crap load of content, and you don’t have to wade through a bunch of ads to get to what you want. Over the years, GameFAQs has never sacrificed ease of use in favor of advertising. I don’t mind the banner ads, and I don’t really mind this new development. I just don’t like the direction GameFAQs is going.

someone take their license away!

Yes…kill them…its probably just an advertisement, but still it doesnt look to nice…

That happened about 4 years ago. It’s not a recent thing.

was i the only one that found it funny that winged death said “run over” instead of “overrun”?

hoo boy… that’s strong
