Criminally underrated games?

Ryo: Excuse me, do you know where I could get a part time job?
Headless Mannequin Scary Thing: urrrrrrrrrrrgh
Ryo: Urrrrrrrrrgh? Thankyou.

He had more in common with an inanimate object
rofl, I think he was supposed to be that way for some reason but I didn’t like it either.
In the normal Silent Hill 3 ending Douglas asks Heather if he can call her by her real name: Cheryl.
I saw the one where she tells him to call her that, are they different endings or did you just remember it a little differently because I never got around to watching all the endings like I did with SH2 (except for the joke endings)
There’s still some debate as to whether or not Laura was real (she could have represented “Mary’s innocence”). I’m not sure what to believe. She was simply out of place in Silent Hill because she simply didn’t belong there.
I’ve never thought of her like that before. I always had a weird theory (mainly because I had a much more literal interpretation since I never really stopped to think abou it lol). I always viewed the town as a real place that Samael is actually warping, and that people with no disturbing secret or past, whatever, (basically innocent, if you will) couldn’t see what was happening. But the one you stated makes much more sense. Even then, that still doesn’t explain some stuff like the letter mary gave laura. I think the developers tried to make stories with no definite conclusion (or at least one they would reveal) about it that would make people think and come up with thier own ideas. That for me is always more enjoyable.
That’s an interesting theory. As always, I’m open to different ideas if they have a solid enough foundation. If the town did physically exist, it makes you wonder where its residents went
Well, the cult does believe that for paradise to become reality, they need to end humanity so it may be reborn or something like that. So, maybe it had something to do with them or the monsters… or maybe they were engulfed into the same world that Harry, James, Heather, etc. sees as an effect of the town turning that way and most failed to survive. Just a thought.

Ryo: Excuse me, do you know where I could get a part time job?
Headless Mannequin Scary Thing: urrrrrrrrrrrgh
Ryo: Urrrrrrrrrgh? Thankyou.
I’m sorry, but that was hilarious. I just wanted to let you know that.

For Geoffrey
Allessa was the vessel through which the cult’s god would be born. That’s why she had to be ritually burned.

Cheryl was Allessa. Cheryl was a part of Allessa that split from her during her ordeal, and returned to Allessa the moment Harry took Cheryl (back) to Silent Hill. In the normal Silent Hill 3 ending Douglas asks Heather if he can call her by her real name: Cheryl. So basically, Cheryl and Allessa were different aspects of the same person. Heather is actually supposed to be one of the cult’s saints who gives birth to herself (the name eludes me at the moment). Allessa endured more pain than anyone ever should, and though she became stronger for it, that strength came at too high a price IMO. Heather probably inherited her strong willpower subconsciously from Allessa.
Ah, so that explains some things. I didn’t know all that. I just figured he asked to call her Cheryl since she was (somewhat) the reincarnation of Cheryl before she fused with Alessa, and I thought maybe Douglas considered Cheryl the person she became again since she “killed” Alessa. Since I thought of Heather as a combination of both, without Alessa; I kind of thought, in a way, she’d just be Cheryl again.

But, I can understand that and it makes sense. I’d play through SH1 for all those details, but… eh… my brother sold our PS2 a while back.

That’s interesting. I can only see that as a theory, though, because there’s really not enough SOLID evidence that could leave it at only that conclusion. That doesn’t mean it’s not possible; I just don’t think it’s too possible because of some of the events involving Laura and Mary.

That’s hoping the Silent Hill movie won’t be as bad as the Resident Evil ones. (All a matter of my opinion, of course.)

You bring up an interesting point there. I didn’t think of that before. Assuming all the Silent Hill games’ storylines tie together, I try not to imagine that James is the only one whose thoughts and feelings reflected in the town. If we take it that way, that would mean that it would have to be the same with Harry, Henry, and Heather (and maybe even the NPC’s if I can stretch it that far).
Perhaps Silent Hill borders whatever hell the cult’s god comes from. That would explain why the town manifests feelings like repressed guilt in Jame’s case.

And don’t worry about going off on a tangent; that doesn’t exactly constitute spamming in my book unless every point you make is pointless per se.
Another interesting aspect of your opinions/theories there. In the case of it only bordering the god’s “world”, maybe we could look at Silent Hill as a place that’s somewhere between Hell and Earth, built/created perhaps for the sole purpose of being somewhere the god can manifest itself and become a physical entity. Or something like that… :anjou_angry:
Welcome Colinski. You should have several great days ahead of you. :anjou_happy: A bit off topic, but which Panzer Dragoon games have you played already? PDS, is, in my opinion, the best of the lot.
I’ve played the original and Zwei. I don’t own an Xbox yet, so the Saturn ones are the only ones I’ve had an opportunity to play.

I think Mortal Kombat 2 is underrated. No, seriously. The SNES version in particular. I found it to be the most balanced of the series, with a decent variety of finishes and a boss that doesn’t insta-win if you go to a corner (Genesis version).

It was better than “Rise of the Robots” anyway.

Hahahaha! Rise of the Robots, I remember that game!

I don’t think MKII is underated, to many it is considered the pinnacle of the series. I tend to agree.

Silent Hill 3 has three endings. The normal ending where Heather survives her encounter with the cult’s god and escapes with Douglas, another where she becomes possessed and kills Douglas with her pocket knife, and a comic book revenge ending where UFOs blow up Silent Hill.

Silent Hill 3 gives players much less room to maneuver than Silent Hill 2 where even looking at Angela’s knife could steer the course of the game (by giving the bereaved James suicidal thoughts).

I prefer some elements to be left up to our imaginations whereby we have to fill in the blank spaces ourselves. Not knowing simply gives us pause for thought. That’s one of the reasons why I love the Panzer Dragoon series: there’s more to everything than initially meets the eye.

Maybe Laura was real, and because she hasn’t lost her innocence yet, she’d have no sins to come back to haunt her. That’s the most widely accepted theory anyway, but as always, I’m open to other possibilities. After all, Maria was “born from a wish”, so why couldn’t Laura have been?

I’d love to know how they all met their maker. This is something the new film is supposed to be handling (with the remaining survivors fighting the evils spawned by the town by embodying their sins), so I can’t wait to see it.

Well at least we can rely on my fellow countryman Sean Bean to provide an entertaining performance…

When James meets Angela at the end of Silent Hill 2, James finally sees the town as she sees it: in flames. In her eyes it has always been like that. Maybe the town seems different to different people.

I loved how Vincent joked about Heather seeing people as monsters. “They look like monsters to you?” That was hilarious. Just imagine if she was actually chopping real people in half and pumping them full of bullets all because they took on monstrous appearances to Heather…

But of course, that’s not what was really happening. Allessa just perfected the art of spawning monsters from her subconscious mind. Silent Hill 3 begins with Douglas triggering Allessa’s dormant memories at the back of Heather’s mind which woke Allessa up.

The town of Silent Hill itself has a bloodly history. An epidemic swept through the town for a start, and all the suffering it and the executions at the prison during the cival war caused, left its mark on the town (possibly in more ways than one). The mysterious boating accidents that happened during a tourist boom seem to indicate there’s a risidual presence left from all that. No one even knows why the town is shrouded in so much myst.

Another theory is that the cult’s god isn’t real, and that the cultists are simply trying to summon it through the town’s ability to embody innermost thoughts. For example, the god at the end of Silent Hill 3 vaguely resembles Allessa because that image was projected from Claudia’s mind. I don’t buy this though, as there has to be some supernatural force at work other than a nexus where human thoughts gather and come to life…

rofl, rise of the robots. It had what? 2 different moves you could use (punch and kick) lol. It did have pretty graphics though, even really good looking cutscenes.

I have to say JSRF was criminally underated by the games buying public in terms of sales performance. This game ultilise aspects of the Xbox’s signiture features yet it still couldn’t make a decent dime.

Bastards.

Sudeki is another recent RPG that has been lost in the shuffle because it’s not KOTOR or FF whatever number we feel like now.

I thought Sudeki was way too sexed up, which alienated a large majority of female gamers. Fable was genuinely good, but the fact that the PC will receive tons of extra content makes you wonder if Xbox owners received a complete game.

It’s a shame JSRF’s sales figures were so mediocre. Even 300 000 sales would have spelled a good turn-over. If that and PD Orta had sold better, Smilebit might never have been disbanded…

That’s life I suppose. At least JSRF and PD Orta can’t be accused of having outdated graphics like Shenmue 2 was for the Xbox.

As for other underrated games, Beyond Good & Evil springs to mind. Galleon is also another contender for one of the most underrated games of this generation.

Sudeki was definitely too sexed up, I agree. Also it was hyped to be the great RPG for Xbox before Fable and franchise talk was occurring. Then people started playing and figured out it was just a shallow hack and slash with about the most cliche story and characters possible.

Oh I 2nd Galleon and Breakdown.

Others would be…

Beyond Good and Evil anyone?

I have that for the PS2. Came close to clocking it, but lost interest.

I picked up BG&E for the Xbox recently, but I haven’t actually sat down and played through it properly yet. It seems like a solid title so far, however.

Beyond Good and Evil. One of the best games I’ve ever played.

Ico. Ditto.

Panzer Dragoon Orta got great reviews but sold poorly.

I also like music games like Technic Beat and Unison and Gitaroo Man

Eternal Darkness and Fatal Frame 2 are also two terribly underrated games.

Yeah, i’m playing The Longest Journey right now and it truly is a great game.

The sequel entitled Dreamfall really caught my attention so I wanted to give the first one a shot and I found it online for under $15.
