England isn’t a proper part of Europe nowadays, but lets not go into that. It would’ve been a lot harder for things to have been co-ordinated with London obliterated. A lot easier for Germany to invade and if that had happened then the US airplanes would have to find other places to base themselves. I don’t think many people realise how close we were to losing that war.
Oh good lord Al3x you missed my point completely, I wasn’t stating it was a choice at the time. I was just giving Gehn the choice, because based on the outcomes of each scenario I do believe that it was better for the US to bomb Japan if the alternative was Germany bombing England.
No disagreement from me here.
I can see your point, but say the outcome of England being bombed was that Europe became totally under Nazi control. I’d have to say that if this happened it would be my opinion that Japan being bombed was “better”.
Germany hadn’t finished producing it’s first nukes by the time the Allies invaded Berlin. Also, there was a gentlemen’s agreement at the start of the war(!) that as long as London was not bombed by Germany, Berlin wouldn’t be bombed by England.
a) Germany’s lack of resources and funding
b) Hitler’s tendency towards propaganda,
I doubt Nazi Germany would’ve ever been able to use nuclear weapons, even if America had chosen to ‘conventionally’ end the war, rather than use nukes.
