Arise Sir Gates

Today the queen will give Bill Gates (The antichrist or the Savior depending on your perference) an honourary knighthood.

Well he’s definitely come a long way since his days in the gaage making computer software/hardware.

Knight?This isn’t the middle age :stuck_out_tongue:

W00t. Quite deserved it appears.

What exactly has the guy done to deserve such a title? I mean, Microsoft didn’t even write DOS, they bought it off some other company if I’m not mistaken.

Microsoft may have released some good products over the years, but I can’t think of anything that they actually invented themselves which the idea wasn’t taken from someone else’s product. Why should he someone be given a title just because they’ve made more money than their competitors?

He’s not getting the title for what he’s acheived in the computer industry. He’s receiving the Knighthood for his services to charity which is usually the standard to receive a Knighthood from The Queen.

Ah okay, that makes much more sense,

Oh they did wright it, and he worked hard to get where he is. Everybody laughed when Bill said in the future every home would have a PC.

Well he had the last laughed , and laughed all the way to the bank while he was at it… Plus hie’s given over a Billion to charity, to fight things like AIDS. What ahve the likes of Sir Alex or Sir Steve done apart from win the odd football match, or Boat race  :P.

I was under the impression that Microsoft bought the rights to an operating system called QDOS and then marketed it as MS-DOS when it was later bundled with IBM PCs. I’m pretty sure that they didn’t create their own OS from scratch back then, although they may have added to QDOS a bit.

I don’t doubt that he’s given a lot to charities etc, outside of the computer industry, but Microsoft has also been responsible for holding back computing in a lot ways too (and the average consumer doesn’t really have a choice about what OS they buy when it comes to wanting to run the majority of computer games, etc). They have started to create some really good projects recently however, such as the .NET Framework.

What I read it was Bill and some other person that wrote dos. Anway that doesn’t matter now.

Also do you think that M$ are the only big corp to play bullyboy tatics ???. They’re all up to it mate. That’s the sad fact of todays world.

Even the likes of SEGA and Nintendo have done the same

Yeah, Microsoft certainly aren’t the only ones.

I’m thinking along the lines of guys like Linus Torvalds who created an OS that was controlled by the users rather than being restricted by whatever Microsoft forces the user to have on their system. Computers should do exactly what the user wants IMO, rather than being “controlled” by a corporate entity.

I haven’t. And I’m pretty sure no one on this forum has either.

Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense for him to earn knighthood based on his contributions to the software industry, a charity-based knighthood makes more sense. Despite the fact that he still remains one of the richest people on the planet, Bill Gates is constantly making contributions to charity. I commend him for that. Most rich people would be greedy and horde their money in his shoes.

Trust me mate if Linus were to become as big as M$ they would act exaclty the same

Speak for yourself, mate. :anjou_happy:

Maybe. The thing is, Linux was designed around the philosophy of an operating system that people could get from free and customize it as much us they want. So it would really contradict the whole point of Linux in the first place, so I can’t help but think the main developers of Linux would not do that.

Another thing - I don’t think anyone could actually turn the entire Linux OS into a solely commercial product now, as it would be going against the license itself (I’m a bit hazy on what people can and can’t do with it though…). And with so many quality free distributions I can’t see many people paying for Linux either.
