Ahhhhh! *dies*

OMG I WILL KILL THE PEOPLE THAT VOTED THE TOP ONE ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh i can’t believe that, that is the stupidest thing i have seen those people don’t know anything!

I’ve been arguing with another hardcore Sega fan over at Shining Force Central about the graphical potential of the Saturn that went to waste. In my humble opinion, the Saturn’s graphical limitations weren’t soley to blame for its unpopularity outside Japan. We all know that it’s a console’s games either make or break a console, and sadly, Sega did a very poor job of bringing home the games necessary to keep the Saturn afloat (many of the Saturn’s best games never even reached our shores). The Saturn almost earned its poor reputation.

Having said that, Guardian Heroes and Dragon Force alone make the Saturn worth owning.

P.S. GameFaqs needs to die a slow and painful death.

Well, not entirely. It’s still my first stop for walkthroughs when I’m stuck in a game. Not all games are popular enough to have their own websites/forums where I can find answers to my questions. What GameFAQs needs is a selective mute button.

Regardless of some of the quality titles released on Saturn, it was architecturally one of the worst consoles ever created

Architecturally, it was the greatest 2D console ever made.

…after the era of 2D was already rapidly coming to a close =\

It was bad timing really. 2D games can be some of the best ever, and some of the most fun IMO. I wonder how well some of the Saturn’s finest 2D titles would have done if they hadn’t come out in the 3D era.

Considering that the majority of modern “gamers” (Many of which are not even worthy of the title) are complete morons who should be deprived of air, I’m not in the least bit suprised, nor do I care what they think. The Saturn was one cool console, nuff said.

The Dreamcast was more powerful despite being tailored for 3D games. Capcom asked Sega to make a whole load of changes to the Dreamcast before it was launched to ensure that the console was powerful enough to cope with conversions of Capcom’s 2D arcade games.

One of the reasons why Capcom’s relationship with Sony took a turn for the worse was because Sony started banning 2D games after monopolising the games industry. Banning 2D games was like driving a dagger into Capcom’s heart. In fact, when Sony introduced its ban on 2D games, Capcom threatened to withhold the release of Resident Evil 2 unless the ban was lifted. Honestly, if people are still willing to buy 2D games, then why ban them?

Feel the hatred. LMAO.

Not to say that banning 2D games is a good idea, but who is to say that people are still buying 2D games? Capcom is the only company that can marginally sell 2D games anymore, and that’s only because of the history that SF has.

During the Saturn and Dreamcast era 2D games were still quite popular. Granted, they were beginning to be overshadowed by 3D games which were really starting to blossom, but that’s no excuse for one company to dictate to everyone what people should and shouldn’t buy.

Neither Microsoft, nor Nintendo, nor Sony (especially) view 2D games in a positive light. Capcom really lost an ally when the Dreamcast died.

Actually, during the Saturn era, sure… there were still some people who loved 2D games.

But, by the time the DC rolled around, 2D games were going the way of the Dodo. Hardly any of the 2D games on DC sold very well at all.

As for dictating what the people should/shouldn’t buy, while I agree in concept, it’s Sony’s console. They can do whatever they want, essentially. Doesn’t mean we have to like it, but it’s their choice.

If 2D games are on the verge of extinction now, then why is Sega’s new Shining Tears going to be 2D? Are RPGs an exception to the rule?

Hardcore Japanese gamers are the exception just about every rule

(dating sims, 2D games, long-winded RPGs that are identical to every other RPG they’ve ever played, simplistic action games with repetitive controls, etc. etc.)

You can’t forget the Yoshinoya game too. After learning there’s a serving fast food sim I’m not sure what’s left to exploit. @_@ I just hope Yoshinoya has a better reputation in Japan than it does in southern California.

No offense Abadd, but you make it sound like 2D are a terrible type of video game that should be neglicated when you list it amongst those others!

What about the Gameboy Advance? I realise that it’s a different market, but if I’m not mistaken GBA games don’t sell badly at all. Surely that proves that there’s still room for 2D games. Games like Sonic have always been better suited to 2D gameplay as well.

With the upcoming releases of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP, I’m worried about the future of 2D gaming.

I need to find a place that’ll let me state my opinions on games and will let people see them, but that won’t keep increasing the minimum word limit as more people write reviews. I had to write a darn essay just to say that Final Fantasy 7 was an okay game. Any help?

I’m just saying that judging the popularity of games based on Japanese gamers’ tastes is not necessarily a good idea  Personally, I love 2D games. I still have my SNES hooked up at home.

And yes, 2D games still have a home on the GBA, for obvious reasons. People view portable entertainment in a much different light than home entertainment. You look for different things in games on the go. And people subconsciously dumb down their expectations for portable games, since they understand that the system could never produce Xbox level graphics, persay.

As for Yoshinoya, Yoshinoya is actually pretty darn tasty in Japan. With the whole Mad Cow scare, they stopped serving beef for a while (only served pork and chicken), so I don’t know how they’re doing now.

Back when the Saturn/PS came out, people were making games 3D for the sake of it. Bug! and the newer Sonic titles come to mind. A 2D Sonic game with the kind of graphics modern consoles can throw out would rock, but most people would dismiss it as lame as it isn’t 3D. Unlike Sonic Heroes which was so linear it was painful.

Those are my thoughts exactly, Arcie. Also, a Sonic game that used an Ikaruga/NiGHTS type approach could be great too, with 3D graphics but 2D gameplay. Sonic is better suited to 2D gameplay IMO.

But, yeah, the sales-factor would probably stop it from getting made, if choosing between that and another 3D Sonic.
