A topic for the literate

Ok, you might think this is funny but my favourite book is a book called Book of Ti’Ana (provided by Snowie, thanc Snowie  ) based on the Myst videogame series.

I really don’t read as much as I would like, mainly cause my tastes are somewhat kinky. All I really like to read is either adventure or fantasy worlds.

Dopefish : I MUST read something from Lovecraft.Do you recommend something? What kind of books does he/she (?) write?

Lovecraft. Nuff said.

I enjoy reading, i just don’t do it as much as i used too, which is a shame.

But uuh favorite books? Thats tough, here is a list:

Silmarillion
Lord of the Rings
Beowulf (yeah okay not so much a book but still great)
Epic of Gilgamesh (again not a book per se but still a great story)
Moby Dick - yes the might white whale rocks my socks.

Yes! Jesus. All this talk of good books and no one had mentioned LOTR! Dispicable. spanks self

I read that, but I didn’t like it much. Probably because I was reading it for homework.

I liked the Myst books too. Even though I own it, I haven’t read The Book of D’Ni yet.

Lovecraft wrote short stories This is the best compilation to start off with. Just be warned, he wrote in a very old style (no dialog) so it’s not something you can quickly read.

Short stories definately work for me!

Book of Atrus was very good.Book of Ti’ana excelent,Book of D’ni average.

… I’m gonna be busy for a while with reading… Damn…

“Abarat” or “Thief of Always” by Clive Barker. (Have them both autographed!!!)

“Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card

(It’s a complete rip-off of Lord of the Rings, and it’s light reading, but…) “Book of Lost Swords” by Fred Saberhagen

And if you’re looking for something a little different, a little cultured, and a little dark, try “Kokoro” by Natsume Soseki

My copy of “Ender’s Game” is autographed. Heh.

“Speaker for the Dead” and “Xenocide” are also good books by Orson Scott Card, but they are in a different style than “Ender’s Game” despite using that book as a sort of prequel to the read of the series. (I would recommend to stay the heck away from “Children of the Mind” though as it has so many inconsistency issues with the previous book.)

I’m also fond of the Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin:

A Wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore
Tehanu

I haven’t read “Tales from Earthsea” or “The Other Wind” yet so I can’t comment on those.

smiles

I’m starting to lose track of all these books. I actually had to print out this topic to remember them all.

Bump.

I started reading Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs today. It’s one of the most awesome books I’ve ever read, I would highly reccomend it to anyone who wants to read something fucked up.

Also, if anyone wants to read something really gross (it made me feel faint) you should read the short story “Guts” by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club. The part with the wax is the worst.

HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY!!! DOUGLAS ADAMS!!

I just finished the 3rd book. Teh r0x. They are hilarious.^.^

David Brin’s Uplift series is very good, as well as stuff by Jack McDevitt (I’ve read Chindi and Moonfall so far).

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman is an excellent sci-fi book that’s really about the Vietnam War. Reading it back to back with Heinlein’s Starship Troopers is very interesting.

Read Neuromancere by William Gibson and realize how unoriginal The Matrix is. This is the book that introduced the term “cyberspace”.

Another awesome cyberpunk-type novel is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

Just about anything by Vonnegut is awesome, especially Slaughterhouse 5, Cat’s Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions.

As far as Crichton goes, be sure to read Andromeda Strain and Sphere.

I’m not as big a Clancy fan as I once was, but he has done some really spectacular stuff. The Sum of All Fears is really really good. Forget the movie.

And if you get through the first three books in the series, you might as well read Children of the Mind. It ain’t that bad.

EDIT: Duh! Hitchhiker’s Guide! Totally forgot. That whole series kicks ass. Read them all. Twice.

Yes, one of the more hilarious series I have read. Wait until you read the forth book. =)

Further favorites of mine:

The Chronicals of Narnia
The Halo series
Good Omens
The Left behind Series
The Simirillion
The Coldfire Trilogy…

I know there is more but I forget easily.

i recently read a science fiction book by billy chrystal… o_O

at first i didn’t think it was THE billy chrystal, but it was. can’t remember what it was called though…

i second moby dick, but i suggest you do a little background research into achaic terminology and whaling, just so you know what ishmael is talking about.

i also second prey and jurassic park/lost world… and as long as you haven’t seen the blasphemy of a movie known as timeline, read that too.

for some reason i’ve been into short stories recently (my pitiful attention span). i read a ray bradbury compilation and the playboy science fiction short story complilation  they were good.

Ray Bradbury is quite good, though he takes a little getting used to.

yeah, he’s a bit like knuckles’ hat.

what genre do you peoples like to read? i’m seeing a lot of fantasy lookin titles in your suggestions. some science fiction here and there…

i’m partial to science fiction. robert a. heinlein, michael crichton, and william sleator were the authors that introduced me to it, but now i like a wide range of it. i’ve come across a lot of bad science fiction though… but there are some truly original novels interspersed amongst the starwars wannabes/futuristic sex related nerd stories

Eh?? Teh 4th book??

Evil Atolm… >.>

I loved that book! So funny.
Actually, I can now recomend the Resident Evil novels by S.D Perry.
