I was setting up my Saturn today to play Nights, however, when I turn my saturn on, the game started up on screen, but the picture was remarkably grainy, and instead of music, I just got the hiss of static. After trying to work out what was wrong for a few minutes, I realised that my Dreamcast was still plugged into the TV, and my saturn wasn’t actually connected to it in any way. Does anyone know how it was then, that I was still able to pick up a grainy picture on my TV.
I am currently working under the theory that the Saturn was built with excavated, ancient technology that is beyond the grasp of the uneducated people of today, but I’m willing to be convinced by any other possibility that you put forwards.
Very mysterious…
I think it was the Saturn telling you it wasn’t plugged in. It got angry that you weren’t taking more care, so it messed with your TV.
Very intelligent creatures those Saturns you know.
It wasn’t a channel I was picking up it was actually playing the opening to Nights, despite the fact that the saturn was not connected to the TV. It was very strange.
The signal between the Saturn and the TV is composed of electrical signals, passed with a carrier current. Despite the Saturn not being plugged into your TV, it will still send out the signals. It is possible that the Saturn’s TV cable was close enough to the Dreamcast one to warrant a circuit.
I vaguely remember the same thing happening to me in the past, although with a different console rather than a Saturn. Arcie’s explanation seems sound, so I’d say the excavated ancient technology theory can be safely ruled out.
It is the ghost of Patrick Swayze which has taken refuge in your Saturn…
Or yeah, what Arcie said makes sense too.
Hahaha, that might well be it!
Anyways, I think a similar thing has happened to me before. Well, not that similar; but I connected a TV cable to my Amstrad CPC 464’s I/O (headphones, I think) socket and got a really-bad-but-still-there picture. :anjou_embarassed:
It is probably just signal ghosting, or connection to the Dreamcast, like the guys said. Alternatively, your Saturn may be more powerful than you think!
That happened once to me before also when I tried to play something I had on a camcorder through a TV it was grainy and fuzzy but there was picture, but no sound. When I went to see what was wrong the Camcorder was connected to the VCR but the VCR not connected to the TV. (Old TV, things have to go through the VCR)
Hmm, well, I should really talk to my original Model 1 Saturn and tell it that I’m sorry for cutting one of the traces on its motherboard in a fit of supposed-60Hz-modding stupidity…
Thankfully it still works (apparently I didn’t cut enough), and I’m leaving the 60Hz idea alone until I can maybe make a switch.
Although I might not even mod that Saturn, I may mod my new (to me) Model 2 since I can put a modchip in that. So the mess that I made of that part of my Model 1’s mobo was in vain.
My ultimate aim is to fit my Sat with a 50/60Hz switch, a country switch, and a CD-R playing modchip, and then buy loads of cool games like Radiant Silvergun and Street Fighter Zero 3. But the likelihood of that happening in the near future is slightly doubtful…
Oh, by the way Drenholm, I got your username over at the NiGHTS forums… Hope you’re not too angry! :anjou_embarassed: (ducks)
