I’m pretty sure he is supposed to be dead. Zastava is a telling name btw, it means “Sentinel” in Russian =)
It was mainly a design choice to make him look intimidating. =D
Or make it look as though he had an arguement with a frying pan and lost, 8-).
or maybe with an arc welder. only he didn’t have a dragon who healed him, like Edge had?
It would be interesting if he was used as a plot device in any future title(s).

Zastava flew head on towards the Infested Grig Orig and most likely died in the process. That event was the last time we see him.

The Zastava fight takes place before the first tower visit, so Grig Orig hadn’t been infested yet. Besides that, you’re right, it’s almost certain he didn’t make it after Edge trashed his ship and he flew at the Imperial Air Force.
Incidentally, he should learned to dodge Sniper shots.
