How stupid of me!I forget all about that.Yeah, now that you mentioned I do recall Saga’s files were semi-transparent the last time I checked them out.

Gehn: don’t worry, I was slightly puzzled by how to get SSF to play games too. The “CD Open” and “CD Close” options actually simulate the CD door on the hardware, so when you select “CD Close”, it acts as if the door’s been closed and starts reading the game disc. (The disc will be read from whatever CD drive you’ve got selected in the option menu.)
The “BIOS” line in the option menu is to show the emulator where your Saturn bios file is. I have the bios file (which should be a .BIN file) named “BIOS”, and I put it in the directory with the emulator itself, so I’ve got it as:
C:\Program Files\SSF_007_alpha_R7\BIOS.BIN
I believe a bios file came packaged with GiriGiri, but if you don’t already have one it shouldn’t be too hard to search one out…
Isn’t this BIOS file suposed to be somewhere within the CD?
Oh no, the BIOS file is data dumped from the Saturn system itself: for example, the Saturn’s on-screen CD player and memory manager are part of its BIOS programming. BIOS files are in pretty much the same legal boat as game rom and iso files (the you-should-only-have-them-as-a-backup-if-you-own-the-actual-product boat), which is why emulators don’t normally come with them.
So how am I to have acess to that file?
It’s suposed to be a file common to all Saturn games right?
The BIOS is data that’s stored in the Saturn hardware: it’s loaded up when you turn the Saturn on, and it contains the programming that tells the Saturn how to load games and function. As for getting a Saturn BIOS file onto your PC, one came with the old GiriGiri emulator (if you can find that download anywhere), and some websites just have BIOS files up for download.
One other thing: when you’re setting the BIOS location in SSF’s options menu, it seems that you have to use the “Browse” button to find the file, rather than typing in the location manually. (It doesn’t seem to save the location when you exit the menu otherwise.)
Thanks Lance
I already did a test drive. Not bad but I still want to see what the Giri Giri can pull off.
It’s best to mess with some of settings in the options menu. Don’t know about everyone else, but the framerate was kind of low up until I changed the Dot Clock value to 4.00. Was getting a steady 60 FPS through games like Shining Force 3. …well, except when casting spells that use emulated transparency effects (which doesn’t work properly in the emulator at the moment).
Ha ha!Essa deve ter sido para mim, tenho andado mt ocupado mas vou voltar com algumas contribui??es fxs para twota
Tamb?m eu!
I?ve finally managed to run PDS with Giri Giri. The solution was a nice format C:. I can say without any doubt that this is a great game in every single way (except maybe for the graphics but what would you expect from a 1998 game?)
It even has socio-political commentaries, so it just gets better!
Spoiler Alert***
Right now I?m on the third CD, and when I want to battle Mel Kava, I can?t see shit when I enter the “zone of conflict”.
The Mel-Kava problem seems to come up because GiriGiri renders some transparency effects incorrectly: there’s meant to be a layer of transparent mist in front of the screen throughout that section, but the emulator gives the mist a black, opaque backcolour so that it obscures everything behind it. You can toggle that graphical layer on and off by pressing the 1 key though, which should solve the problem. (GiriGiri does a similar glitch with the first and third Atolm battles if I remember correctly, but in them, only the sky in the background is obscured.)
Thanks Lance Way, it works!
This might be because of the emulator. Looking at the GiriGiri screenshots here on TWotA, the graphics seem to be distorted in parts (as if the emulator attempts to make them better but messes up in some areas). I’d say you can only get the true graphical experience if you play it on an actual Sega Saturn. But I could be wrong.
I agree. Having played Saga on both the Saturn and the Emulator, I prefer the Saturn rendering better. The graphics were designed with a lower resolution in mind, and don’t really work well with anything higher.
I don’t really mind the graphics being made high-res, as it often allows you to see detail in texture mappings that was obscured by the Saturn’s low specs; for example, if you go near people in a town in GiriGiri, you can see the detail in their faces an awful lot more clearly:
http://www.panzerdragoon.net/underground_ruins/lance_way/high_res_03.jpg http://www.panzerdragoon.net/underground_ruins/lance_way/high_res_04.jpg http://www.panzerdragoon.net/underground_ruins/lance_way/high_res_05.jpg http://www.panzerdragoon.net/underground_ruins/lance_way/high_res_06.jpg
However, GiriGiri does still make the game look worse than the Saturn in my opinion because of all the rendering bugs: textures get distorted all over the place (e.g. Edge’s face is usually messed up), fog and darkness effects aren’t emulated properly, 2D planes (like the desert floor, the surface of the sea) don’t sync up with the rest of the environment properly, some locations just have weird things wrong with them (like Georgius, Mel-Kava and the Excavation Site), not to mention the low-quality sound emulation and the points where the emulator freezes. However, it does allow you to take crisp high-res screenshots that look very nice (if you’re careful not to screenshot anything buggy), which is why I’ve used it so much myself in the past.
On the other hand, the current SSF emulator (that Narayan linked to earlier on) seems to emulate games much more faithfully than GiriGiri, so for anyone just wanting to play Panzer Dragoon Saga on their PC, I’d recommend giving that a try…
i have got PDS to run fine on cassini up until the encounter with the Gigralyph, at which point the camera continues to circle it. havent tried to run the game as an iso file yet, hope that helps
P.S. why in hell have i manadged not to find this site until now? its what iv’e been looking for for the last… 7 years or so.
if you want to solve that, make sure to use a program that slows the computer, or you could try to run a lot of demanding programs on your pc while you play (or both ). It worked well for me and I have a Amd Athlon 3000+, 1024 MB of ram.
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, tried it again, and it worked!! thanks! i feel a million times better now, lol. im definitely keeping that program, thanks again especially to lance and gunman !!!
