The strength of WinRAR is better compression and first of all better security. The decoder is able to detect single bit errors (not possible with ZIP) and the recovery record helps repairing damaged files.
MPEG-1 is the king of compatability, just make sure you don’t accidentally encode MPEG-2, because you need additional software on most systems to play that (like a software DVD player).
