The Longest Journey: Dreamfall

Funcom launched a new website about Dreamfall today, the sequel to The Longest Journey. The original was one of my favourite games ever, and I’m really looking forward to the next chapter in the Saga. Most of you probably didn’t play the original, which was a traditional click & point adventure game, but with a brilliant storyline.

The sequel will now have a wider variety of gameplay, including action elements. It will appear on console too and although it’s not official yet, there’s a good chance it will arrive on XBox. Funcom is trying to take adventure games to the next level with this one, and I hope they succeed. If you’re interested, check out the artwork and first screenshots of the game, they’re worth a look.

Yesterday I heard this guy talk about how this game was. That’s two persons advising me to get it.

I’ll try to play the first one so i can then buy the XBox one. It’s just one of those games I know I’m gonna like just bcause it is an Adventure game. (the first one anyways).

Didn’t the new broken sword already “Take the advneture genre to the next level by adding this and that and action and what not” ? That’s a load of bs imo but heh… Hopefully this game will be as good as/better than it’s predecesor but nowadays you can’t count on anything, the original Syberia was amazing for example but it’s sequel, Syberia 2 gets bad reviews all over the place… Hopefully that won’t be the case with The Longest Journey 2

I understand what you mean with that “next level” statement, but I also understand Funcom’s decision not to use the traditional point & click gameplay. They want to reach a wider audience (in Dreamfall’s case, they *need *to reach a wider audience). The developers seem confident that they can make this game better than the first, so I’m not stopping them  Something tells me they might just succeed. Btw, there’s an interview with Ragnar Tornquist (game director and writer of Dreamfall) at IGN: http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/512/512726p1.html

I loved the first one, however I feel that if they try to reach a wider audience with the next game by adding more action, it will lose it’s appeal since too many of the adventure elements will be cut down and simplified.

I just hope it won’t lose too much of what made the first game so epic.

Almost all the fans were unhappy when they heard they would be action in the sequel, but I don’t think this is just a cheap way to try and sell more copies of the game. There’s a new interview at Adventuregamers.com, and it’s got a few examples about the action elements: http://www.adventuregamers.com/display.php?id=377. I think this game has a lot of potential. The new interface that replaces Point & Click sounds great, and the graphics look amazing with still 18 months to go until it’s released.

To be honest - I got completely bored with the fantasy world to the point I couldn’t continue the game. Stark was fascinating, like playing the Blade Runner game, but Whatwasitsname…

Arcadia. I really liked the drastic difference between Stark and Arcadia though. I can’t say I really preferred one of them. They were equally interesting in my opinion. We haven’t seen any screenshots of Stark in Dreamfall yet, only some artwork. I’m interested to see what it will look with the new graphics engine Funcom is using.
