Great move, Sega. Hopefully this will turn out to have enjoyable gameplay, and a decent storyline.

BioWare’s involved?
I can’t believe it.
Finally a Sonic RPG. FINALLY A GOOD GAME FOR MY DS.
Good idea. I hope its five times better than that terrible Sonic the Hedgehog on the PS3.
Hmmm, DS.Hmm, Sonic.
There are better SEGA franchises out there;that would better be served by this…
I hope it’s got a Blue Dragon-ish cute & funny style rather than be another attempt to make Sonic “cool” or whatever.
What, you don’t like the sunglasses-wearing, cigarette-smoking, coke-snorting incarnation of the character that’s been around since the early 00s? Travesty!
I just wonder, what’s the point? I mean, the Sonic universe isn’t the most fertile place for the kind of plot and characters that you would find in a typical RPG (especially a BioWare RPG). Yeah, I know that Mario RPGs worked out, but that’s essentially because the Mario formula was able to be converted to an RPG format, and the story took more of a focus on the secondary characters, as opposed to just being about Mario. Sonic is pretty much the arch typical optimistic protagonist, and I don’t really think the character is strong enough to carry an RPG plot.
There’s this thing called “Expanding the Secondary Characters’ Roles” which could just as easily be applied to the Sonic characters. And god forbid we give any of those characters a backstory (Seriously, there’s a shitload of vagueness for a lot of the characters’ backgrounds; Knuckles comes to mind).
And Vyse was the archetypal optimistic protagonist as well, but that worked out just fine.
As for the Sonic world not being ripe with content… like you said, they did it with Mario. There is very little difference between the depth of each world, but Mario worked out fine. And if Square can merge FF-style story with Disney characters, you can make anything work

But Vyse was the product of the entire world of Skies of Arcadia, whereas with Sonic, they are going to have to build a storyline around this already established character. There’s a difference between making your own, entire creation, and having to build something around someone else’s creation. Yeah, I know it worked with Mario, but Mario honestly doesn’t have much of a personality, nor does he speak. So it’s somewhat easy to build a storyline around him, since he’s not as “developed” as Sonic (not that Sonic is a very developed character, he just has an established personality).
I just have doubts with the world of Sonic the Hedgehog being used for an RPG. Of course, my worries could end up meaning very little, and BioWare chooses to focus on gameplay as opposed to story (but with BioWare, they seem to try and excel at all aspects).
I’m not worried at this since i care less for SONIC as a game now anyways. but the western RPG scene has been creating a fresh approch to the genre than the japanese have ,for the last few years and SONIC RPG could have something that could shake the DS RPG scene in general.
sonic + bioware + ds
that can either lead to something really good or something really bad
bioware must have something up their sleeve if they were to agree to something like this

Like, like wanting to make a really cool game? That could sell well?
Holy conspiracy, batman.

Well it all boils down to who approched who. Would sega actually approch Bioware and ask them to make a RPG out of Sonic? Or did Bioware inquire Sega about the possibility of turning Sonic into an RPG? Especially when their IP was being shopped around so Bioware knew that they could get their hands on it. Its more likely a 50/50 thing with lack to the actual facts of what really happened. Sega approched them and Bioware had a choice to what game they wanted to make.
Hmm, I’m not sure what to make of this really. I’ll wait for more information before giving an opinion.
I heard that the full name is going to be “Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood”. Wasn’t the Dark Brotherhood in the Sonic comics?
I kind of dig the whole “Legend of Mana” (or whatever the game was called) -esque backgrounds contrasting the 3d rendered characters. Looks pretty sweet so far.
