Sega Saturn copy protection breaking - rounding up troops!

Hey everyone,

There have been some interesting revelations recently regarding the copy protection on Sega Saturn game discs. :anjou_wow:

For those of you who don’t know what I am referring to, Sega Saturn original game discs have an additional ring around the edge of the CD, which bears copyright writing relating to Sega. Whether it is normal data with unusual patterns, specially burnt data or even a complete hologram is not known. However, to this day nobody has been able to reproduce it on writable CD media, hence the term ‘copy protection’ - it has worked pretty well so far!

The protection can be defeated, however, by using a ‘mod chip’ fitted to your Saturn. However, this is not practical, hence the search for a more general method with which to simply burn the ring to CD-Rs. Over at the recent SegaXtreme topic (which, interestingly enough, has a bounty for the lucky ‘winner’ of the breaking competition), a member claims to have intercepted the data which these chips send to the Saturn, fooling them into allowing CD-Rs to boot.

Also, at Club CD Freaks, another member claims to have determined the starting sector (position on the CD) and obtained identical reads of the data for several games. Many people are now beginning to think that the data is readable, but just harder to read.

I still think that it will be the writing that will cause the problems - I haven’t yet seen a detailed explanation for the Sega writing on the ring. However, a member at CD Freaks has written a pretty versatile CD-writing tool which claims to be able to start burning at any position on the disc or miss out areas from being written - surely quite good opportunities for the ring data!

I’m just posting this topic to ‘round up’ help - I find the recent discussions very interesting and would be intrigued to see how far the ‘investigation’ goes. :anjou_happy:

You’ve already showed me this on MSN, but definitely keep us posted if anyone does manage to crack the copy protection. I for one would be most interested in playing …backups… of my Saturn games, if only for preservation.

And so I can finally play Radiant Silvergun on my aging PAL Saturn without having to fork out ridiculous amounts on eBay…

ditto

It would also be alot easier to play the translated Shining Force scenario 2 and 3 games if the translation patch gets finished eventually.

True, true.

Maybe then I could actually sample Saga. . . Or. . . Nevermind, I don’t even have the images for those.

sample saga? you could always but one of the disk 1 demos… they go pretty cheap

This would be great if it’s true, I’d love to be able to play burned discs in my Saturn. Then I could make a copy of all my rare games like Dragon Force and PDS, and store them in an air-tight container so they stay in pristine condition while still being able to play them! Plus as previously stated, the SF3 translations would be a hell of a lot more enjoyable on the actual system then through an emulator.

Doesn’t an Action Replay do the same job though? >.>

No - you must be thinking of the cartridges which can defeat the region protection.

Uploads of Pinchy’s ring data dumps! :anjou_love:

Go to gmail.com and enter the following details:

User name: drenholm.uploads
Password: Drenholm

(Yeah, I tend to use that user name elsewhere - confusing for TWotA members, huh? :anjou_happy:)

RING_data.zip = Pinchy’s main ring data read, not sure what format (says raw)
ring_data_sub.zip = Pinchy’s subchannel data read, not sure if interleaved

Enjoy, and investigate to the full!

And don’t use my uploads account for anything else, please - if you want a Gmail invite, simply ask me and I’ll send you one. Glad to help! :anjou_happy:

It’s amazing that this is still going on. I hope it’s cracked soon.
