I don’t know if this applies to anyone else, but Scott recently PM’d me a URL for this online game thingy. Basically, it’s a brain teaser, giving you clues so you can work out passwords and stuff.
I’m already stuck on the fourth screen. They seem like interesting puzzles, but the difficulty curve is a bit on the steep side…
EDIT: Whoops, actually I’ve got past that one now. What was the “torch extinguished” / “he stumbled into the darkness” text about? That didn’t seem to have much to do with the puzzle…
Did you notice the second mp3 file in the source code? As well as the background music, there’s something else there… and if you download that file, you’ll notice that it isn’t actually a working mp3. That file’s the key, really…
Unfortunately I gave up at screen 16, as the puzzles get ridiculously abstract by that stage (and I really should get some work done this weekend). By the way, a warning for screen 10: you actually need extra software to solve the puzzle. You’ll probably guess what it is quite quickly, though.
Yeah, some of them are really harsh. The next one is pretty easy though, if I remember correctly; for most of the later ones you’ve just got to look very carefully through the source code, and pick out anything that’s unusual.
I’d say that either…
1) “JAY PACK” said out loud sounds sort of like “JAY PEG / JPG”, which is the file format you need to turn the mp3 into
OR
It was just a red herring. Some of the later clues (like that one) are so random and obscure that you might solve the puzzle without understanding them anyway. There are also some easter egg-style things hidden in there that don’t actually help you solve the puzzles, but it’s fairly easy to recognise them for what they are…

You don’t.
All I’ve got so far is that “Paul is dead” is a reference to a Beatles rumour, or something. I’m thinking maybe those words backwards are part of a Beatles song?

Oh no, I managed to do that one in under five minutes; it’s nothing to do with the Beatles, in fact it’s nothing to do with what the text literally says at all…
Check the source code carefully, look at the formatting on the text. That might help you out…
Again, I don’t know how he figured we could get that.
I googled “Paul is dead” and got the rumour that Paul McCartney was already dead, and he had a lookalike. The title of the page was a Beatle’s song, and they had an album with a colour in it. I was entering all the song titles in sequence and nothing worked!
GAH!!!
Well, anyways, thanks for your help. I really need to try solving these on my own. But I’ll likely come crying back.
edit I think I’m just gonna give up. I’ve got to 12 and I’m once again completely stumped. I think it’s the name of the book but I don’t know.
these are tough mainly because there are no rules, no constants, and no real limits to what you may be required to do rather than difficulty of the riddle itself… but i guess that’s why it’s so pleasing to figure them out.
a lot of these take me a long time to figure out, where as i am normally do decently at other riddles that require you to juggle a lot mentally, but you have a better idea of what you are supposed to do. are you guys familiar with that old riddle einstein came up with? about the 5 men, their houses, their pets, their drinks, and their brand of smokes?
