Saori Kobayashi interview. Questions?

An acquaintance at another forum will be conducting an interview with the composer of PDS and PDO. I can’t think of anything I need answered from her, but if you guys have any questions, I’ll pass them along to him.

Idk, what instruments did they use for some of the more otherworldy sounds maybe?

I would like to know about the process of scoring a video game. Does one sit down and play a beta-version of a game without music, and then figure out what would suit all the possible situations? Or is the composer simply given a list of musical tracks needed and the feeling they should inspire and left to their own devices, without even touching the game?

If another Panzer Dragoon game was made, what would you like to see in it? Would you be interested in scoring it?

I can’t think of any burning questions right now. Where will the interview end up being published?

Well, my suggestions all relate to her PD soundtracks, and may not be very good, but here goes.

  • What were her favourite tracks from her two PD OSTs? And does she have a clear favourite from the two?
  • When composing said OSTs, how much did they refer to, and take influence from, the OSTs of the first two PD games? Particularly Zwei, as it’s also done in Cybersound and definitely sounds more similar.
  • Is Orta intentionally more influenced by Zwei than Saga was, or am I just mad for hearing that?

I’d also be interested to know:

  • what the Saturn’s hardware/software (Cybersound) was like to work with, and
  • whether composition was done exclusively on it (and if not, what else was used).
  • Then I guess it’s worth asking what Orta was like in comparison, with the different tools at hand.

I acknowledge I’m probably asking too many questions! :anjou_embarassed: Luckily for everyone involved, I think that’s about it. Obviously, if you have limited questions/space, which I imagine you do, choose the ones you find most interesting/etc.

Anyway, thanks for letting us know, and the opportunity. :anjou_happy: Tell Saori her PD OSTs were great! (It’s a shame she hasn’t done further work on modern hardware, i.e. besides Sonic Drift and Triple Trouble, which I should check out in any case.)

What were her inspirations when composing the music for PDS and PDO?

How much freedom did she have with the direction of the music?

Were there any particular tracks or moments in the game that she found hard to create music for?

Is she currently working on something else?

Any updates on this? I hope the interview went as planned.

I asked him for an update at the end of October and he said he was still putting the questions together. Apparently, Ms. Kobayashi wants the interview to be conducted in english, so making sure everything reads right can be a bit of a struggle.

The good news is that all the questions asked in this thread will be in the interview. He told me something would get published in a month or so, so it should go up any day now. I’ll be sure to link it in this thread when it does.

Thanks for the info, I’m really looking forward to it!

Ditto. :anjou_happy:

Bump: Did this interview go ahead, Raizen?

Sorry for the late reply, Solo.

Apparently no progress has been made unfortunately. Kobayashi has been quite busy and communication has stalled. He still has all the questions everyone submitted though, and intends to finish the interview eventually.

So I guess it’s a “when it’s done”, kind of situation. :anjou_embarassed:
