Queston about the Japanese version of Orta

I have yet to get hold of a copy of Orta and where I am living at the moment there are no US/UK versions available so it looks like I may need to go with a Japanese version, How English friendly is this?

I know the language in the games isnt understandable anyway but is the story subtitled in English as well as Japanese? Also Im assuming I can navigate the menus and what have you but is there anything else that I will miss without an English language version?

most of the story is probably up on Solo’s site, but there are a few small parts in the game where they tell you to do something, and you are supposed to do it. There is a lot of it in the bonus material, but it also appears in teh normal game.

Why can’t you just order it online?

Actually, I thought I heard somewhere that playing the Japanese version on an American or European Xbox will actually play it in English. It seems it uses the country codes of the console to determine what language the game runs in, rather than having a different version for each region. Not 100% sure on this, but I’m sure someone here can confirm.

I can confirm this.

That doens’t make sense. If you have an american XBox console you can’t even run a japanese game.If that was the cas eplaying Phantom Dust wouldn’t be a problem.

I guessed that we were talking about modded Xboxes here; or is Panzer Dragoon Orta actually a multi-region disc? I’ve heard about this before as well, although I’m not aware of the details.

Well, I actually live in Japan at the moment so my Xbox is Japanese. So the disk would presumably gravitate towards that regardless of modding and things?

I had a look on Ebay and I think I will order it in the new year. I didnt realise it was so cheap. I guess its not old enough to be a “cult classic” yet. I was just being lazy and impatient about it.

Yeah, since your Xbox is NTSC-J, the subtitles in Panzer Dragoon Orta will set themselves to English regardless of whether the version of the game that you buy is PAL, NTSC-U, or NTSC-J. I can confirm this, as I used to have the Japanese version of PDO and the subtitles were in English on a modded PAL Xbox.

All of the dialogue is in the Dialogue section of this site though, which should help .

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if there’s any boot disc like solutions for playing imports on PS2’s and Xboxes (without having to unscrew the console)? I know that there’s a working Gamecube one, but I haven’t seen any for those two systems.

my friend is currently lending me his ps2 and he uses a a boot disc for it.

it works like a typical boot disc except that you have this little piece of plastic that you have to push into the front of the ps2, slide it to the right (to unlock the tray), then manually pull out the tray, switch discs, manually push in the tray, slide the piece of plastic to the left (to lock the tray), then press a button to start the game.

i think it’s called disc swapper or something

Yeah, I’ve heard of those, but I’ve also heard that they can screw up your PS2 DVD drive. Has your friend had any problems with his one?

There’s a topic about it here

Actually, I have the Slide Card on one of my 3 PS2s (the other 2 have Messiah modchips) and, unlike the other two with internal mods, the PS2 runs great and I’ve been using the Slide Card mod on it for 2 years now. It’s so funny when people go off saying, “you’re going to ruin your CD/DVD drive doing the swap trick!!” blah blah blah…I’ve heard it all before, especially during the Saturn renaissance, and believe me when I say it - it’s a MYTH…unless, you’re a clutz and don’t know what the hell you’re doing.

Dont you mean they will set themselves to Japanese regardless or the games region?

I mean that game checks the hardware region… so if you own a Japanese Xbox, the subtitles will appear in Japanese regardless of what version of the game you own. Both sets of subtitles appear to be saved on the disc. This was good for people like me who were too impatient to wait for the NTSC-U and PAL versions to come out, but not so good in your case…

EDIT: You have three PS2’s Kadamose… whatever for? Anyway, it’s good know that Slide Card is an okay option…

Since when do people own 3 PS2’s???

I acctually have 2 PS2s for US and Japanese games as it bizzarrely worked out cheaper than getting one modded to play the other. Or at least it was back in the day.

Kind of annoying that there isnt a way to select the subtitles in view of the fact the game obviously contains both.

That’s kinda efficient, but crazy.

What, you people just made of money??

The reason is because Sony doesn’t know how to make hardware worth shit. My first PS2 PS2 was a first generation V1 system, and it only lasted 4 months after a chip was installed. My second PS2 was a V3 PS2, and it lasted 8 months before getting the dreaded (Disc Read Error). My final PS2 is a V7 PS2, and I’ve had it for over 2 years now and it still runs correctly, surprisingly.

gone are the days when systems used to have 90 month warranties :anjou_sad:

The hardware may suck, but the reason for it is certainly not the fact it broke down after being illegally modded by a person of questionable skill, knowledge and dedication in his efforts to do it properly in order to have a happy customer :anjou_sigh:
