PSone games- Your thoughts

** Geoffrey** I mentioned in my post as well that FFVII is overrated.
However that does** not **make it a bad game in any way. It’s annoying that people think it’s the best thing ever however the game itself is still enjoyable and an experienced that is worth it for anyone that owns a ps one.

And I think my distinction was done right between console and PC RPGs since I also mentioned the control scheme issue rather than just the type of game.
Also Morrowind is a PC RPG that got a console conversion and KOTOR is possibly one of the first PC style RPGs that made it on a console first. And it still had to adopt certain characteristic from the way console RPGs are done.
It’s clear that if you want rpgs in the style of Baldur’s Gate and Morrowind you are better off with a PC since it’s where the majority of them are while if you want RPGs in the style of Final Fantasy and Panzer Dragoon Saga and Grandia you get a console since it’s where the majority of these appear on and also where they feel more comfortable with a console controller rather than a chunky keyboard.
In the future my disctinction will propably not be correct anymore since consoles start to get a lot of games that used to be made for the PC only and also developers start paying more attention to the conversions to make them feel as comfortable to play as if they were designed for the specific system on first place.
For now however I think all I wrote so far applies.
(Also on the other hand western companies start creating “japanese” style RPGs, namely with Anachronox that I mentioned and with the upcoming Sudeki for X-box)

I must be to tired to understand that, I read it all, yet I didn’t understand…smacks head must be tired…but I am v.hungry…I had a packet of crisps for breakfast O_o

And you say you aren’t a spammer?

And you say you aren’t a spammer?
yeah, sorry, I agree with that, it is spammy, I must have forgot what district I was in…probs due to MSN…sorry again.

Thanks for your opinions, I will get round to buying them at some point. But yeah, Grandia is great. I was so disappointed when they didn’t release it on the Saturn in this country. I love the ‘free for all’ style of the battle system, I wish more RPGs would use that.

As for Dead or Alive 3, I enjoyed it quite alot.(And found it completely different to Namco’s series) Especially in multi-player when my mate and I were pretty much at the same skill level. Even more fun in tag battle. I guess that’s the main reason I wanna get the original (another missed Saturn opportunity).

The only other PSone games I have right now are Road Rash (I wanted it on the Saturn years ago and like the MegaDrive ones) and Bomberman (my Mother is a Bomberman fan!) Oh, and Grandia of course!

You know, some people aren’t willing to admit how overrated Final Fantasy 7 really is, lest they be ostracised. Am I back in high school again?

I’m waiting for Final Fantasy to go out of date, then everyone will shudder whenever the mere words “Final Fantasy” creep their way into a conversation about the ridiculous trends of yesteryear, or do you think that particular series of RPGs will remain trendy forevermore? With the aid of Sony’s ubiquitous marketing power, who knows?

There was a time when people bought games because they were good, but now, mainstream gamers follow everyone else off the proverbial cliff of popularity regardless of however good a game is.

As you can see, my perspective on the Final Fantasy series is a little skewed. I know, I know: I should be executed ASAP because I’m not entitled to my own opinion.

Final Fantasy 7 may be good, but it pales in comparison to many RPGs that have never received the same level of attention – no, adulation it has basked in for so long. Do you think that is in any way fair? I love the way you get to sit back and watch the whole game, while hardly making controller inputs, by the way. Shining Force 3 has a story Final Fantasy 7 could only dream of, and yet, we were never given the chance to appreciate it.

Does that mean the control setup is any less responsive? No.

With more and more western RPG developers creating RPGs for the home console market (like BioWare, Interplay/Black Isle Studios, Bethesda etc) and less and less companies willing to translate good Japanese RPGs for fear that anything without the name “Final Fantasy” branded to it won’t sell (Nintendo anyone?) things are set to change. Prepare for a new breed of console RPGs.
Vagrant Story is hardly an rpg, it’s more like an action puzzle adventure (lol) with rpg elements.
Excellent story, excellent characters, good battles, clever use of the block puzzles HOWEVER both the battles AND the block puzzles get tedious later in the game. Especially the puzzles. And for a purist they might seem way off place from the start of the game as well since frankly if they make a sequel I hope they will lose that part and just make it a proper and serious adventure with logical puzzles rather than cube pushing/pulling/rolling/etc.
Story alone was worth it to finish the game but for someone else it might not work as well :)
I agree with you about the block puzzles but i don’t think they were bad enough to detract from the game at all. Sure fighting can get a bit tedious but honestly you can say the same of any rpg. The battle system in Vagrant Story is just so well thought out that it is a pleasure to play. From the different Status spells, to attack/defense. Not to mention just how deep the weapon and armor making is. And to top it all off the story is simply excellent.

I just think this is Square’s best game as of late and that anyone who owns a PSX should pick it up.

lol, well FF wont survive to long…can you imagine a FFXXIII?

The way things are going it feels like that at times >.<

Speaking of Chrono Cross, I was in a local VG store today and they had mounds of CC themed clocks for $5! Tight as hell!

Geoffrey, did I ever talk about how much FFVII is overrated? I only agreed that it’s overated I don’t think that for my point to come accross I need to go in details about how overrated or whatever a game is. I don’t get fanatized over games and call any of them the BEST THING EVER TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY, so in similar fashion I also don’t think it’s necessary to go all out against it and say OMG THIS IS THE MOST OVERRATED GAME IN KNOWN HISTORY!SUX! or whatever. It’s just not like me to get fanatised over things like that, I’m sorry.
The way you said “You know, some people aren’t willing to admit how overrated Final Fantasy 7 really is, lest they be ostracised. Am I back in high school again?” and other similar things it actually seems that the opposite applies here. That ppl will be ostracised if they admit that FFVII is worth having in your ps one games collection.
My point is simple:
Just cos a game is ovverated that doesn’t mean it’s not worth having or that it’s a bad game. Are there better games? Sure there are. I mentioned as well that I’d get other games like Xenogears beforehand. Does that mean this game isn’t worth having for a ps one owner? No it doesn’t as it’s still fun. What’s hard about this to understand and why do you act like I’m saying something absurd or like I said that FFVII is the best thing ever?

Also, the guy said he got a used ps one and was going to buy games for it so he asked which title is worth getting from a certain collection of used games and I answered him with my opinion. Saying Shining Force III or whatever else is better doesn’t really have anything to do with what he asked, does it? Sure you can mention it but does that mean that other ppl can’t actually reply to the question he asked?

And don’t start discussing about the whole FF series now as we were talking specifically about VII. It’s a known fact the series has been going downhill ever since it began with a few exceptions but it’s not what the previous posts have been about.
If the series will keep being popular or not is irrelative to if FFVII is a good game for a ps one owner or not despite it being overrated.

About the controls in converted games, yes they can be less responsive depending on how good/bad job has been done but the biggest drawback is that it’s simply awkward to play games like that with a keyboard rather than a PC based control scheme possibly with a point and click alike interface which is the most comfortable setup for the PC. Using the arrow keys and such is just chunky and doesn’t feel natural therefor it hinders the experience furthermore. Try playing Metal Gear Solid 2 on a PC with the keyboard for example and see if it’s anywhere near as comfortable and/or fun as on PS2 or X-box (Btw I don’t really like that game it’s just a recent example of stupidly converted games)
