Hi eveyone, I’m brand spanking new here - this is my first post. I’ve just finished Panzer Saga for the first time. I’ve actually had it since 98 but haven’t got round to playing any more than disc one - I’ve NO idea why:) I guess I’m so used to RPGs being more like ‘work’ after owning a Playstation that I didn’t think I’d have actual fun:) Anyway, suffice to say, even this far down the line, I’m still blown away by the subtlety and beauty of this game. Superb.
Actually, I’d like to start with a minor (probably already given) contribution. Looking at the theories as to the end of PDS, I see the general concensus is that Edge ‘dies again’ because the player ‘lets go’ of the control he/she instigated at his initial death at the start.
Now, coming to this fresh, I have a small problem with this- in the end movie, where Gash is about to give up and stop waiting for Edge, you see him look up to camera and there is clearly the sound of a Dragon wingbeat. This would lead us to believe that both Edge and, inexplicably, Dragon are just fine - though it leaves it nicely ambiguous. Perhaps this is the point. We controlled Edge’s fate. So the matter of whether he lives or ‘dies’ at the end of his mission is really up to us. If we want him to live - ergo he lives.
Perhaps this is an optimistic appraisal of the situation, but if Azel can survive indipendently of the mission she was destined for (as drones are supposed to shut down after they do their ‘thing’), then so can Edge and the Dragon. Or maybe the fact that Azel made it proves her destiny is not yet fulfilled - and the romantic in me likes to think that might have something to do with our golden boy:)
We can easily conclude that Edge did indeed die at the end of PD Saga (especially given new evidence in PD Orta). If Edge had survived, Gash wouldn’t have just heard the sound of dragon wings flapping, but would have met Edge in person (the dragon made it out of Sestren, so why not Edge as well?). I suspect Lagi was letting Gash know Edge was dead so that he would move on.
Ah fair enough then (though he’ll always be alive in my save game:) ), I haven’t played Orta.
PDS was my first experience of the Panzer world. I’ve since got myself a copy of the first two games. Admittedly Panzer 1 has aged but Zwei is pretty decent.
I guess I’m being spoiled on PDS, but the first two, after playing Saga, seem rather empty experiences. Is Orta any better?
Fans of RPGs will not always be fans of shooters as well. It’s just that the world in which the shooters were set, was so deep that it could easily translate into an RPG.
First of all welcome man
Glad you enjoyed the best game that as ever existed
Anyways, your point is interesting but Edge did die unfortunately. The wing sound you hear is probably the dragon flying towards his resting place…
…he then comes back in Panzer Dragoon Orta (which is the 4th chapter of the series in case you don’t know).
Ah, I read a few spoilers on this site regarding Orta and it all makes sense:)
When I can pull myself away from the Saturn and DC, I might have to get an Xbox (though my wife refuses to have one in the house - they’re ugly and we’re a strictly Apple Mac household;) ) - maybe if they release a white one (other than the Japanese only PDO version of course) I’ll be able to talk her round:)
Totally unrelated, but I got my copy of the PDS Memorial Album Soundtrack CD from Japan today - absolutely beautiful, though the extra remixed tracks are the worst thing on it.
Okay, granted the Sonic Team remix is pretty lackluster, but one of them simply rocks. It’s the last track on the first disc, I believe. I like how they rearranged the vocals, instead of just laying down a generic beat over the normal melody and vocals.
