Hang in there baby!

This is little more than an idle curio with no sanity-sundering ramifications for the Panzer Dragoon franchise, nor cosmos-shattering implications of the nature of God and reality that will redefine our perception of existence and forcibly haul humanity on a new and terrible course, but I thought that it would be interesting to note.

The “100 Greatest Games of ALL TIME!” article is a long-established staple of gaming magazines, and it enjoys a venerable pedigree and lineage. Over the last couple of months the British publication GamesTM (the magazine John Scszepaniak wrote his article for last year) decided to fill out some blank pages with its own version, and Panzer Dragoon Saga snagged thirtieth place.

Now, with the position’s decided by reader’s votes, we all know that articles such as these cannot be classified as objectively definitive. Nonetheless, GamesTM is a relatively highbrow member of gaming publications, so hopefully the opinion of its readership should be esteemed somewhat higher than others, and reassuringly the fact that the positions are decided by popular acclaim informs us that Panzer Dragoon hasn’t been entirely forgotten by the general gaming public. Keep the flame alive! :anjou_happy:

Just for the sake of reference and curiosity, here are the positions some other titles won in the chart:

100th - Chuckie Egg.
95th - Pac-Man.
93rd - Resident Evil.
85th - Guardian Heroes.
71st - Final Fight.
68th - Asteroids.
64th - Space Harrier.
61st - Phantasy Star Online.
55th - Starcraft.
53rd - Space Invaders.
50th - Sega Rally.
49th - Tomb Raider.
41st - Lemmings.
37th - Gunstar Heroes.
29th - Manic Miner.
28th - Secret of Monkey Island.
22nd - Half-Life.
21st - Metal Gear Solid.
19th - Doom.
18th - Streets of Rage II.
16th - Sonic the Hedgehog II.
14th - Shenmue.
12th - NiGHTS.
5th - Final Fantasy VII.
2nd - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
1st - Super Mario Kart.

That is comforting, and nice to see other Sega appreciation up there too. Especialy NiGHTS :anjou_love:

The only meaningful top 100 article I’ve ever seen was in brit mag CVG about 6-7 years ago (before the DC came out, even). Top 3 then were:

  1. Goldeneye (N64)
  2. Legend of Zelda: OoT (N64)
  3. Final Fantasy VII (PSX)

PDS was in position 15 in that one. I can’t remember where NiGHTS was, but it was reasonably high.

Is that issue of the mag out now? I might even purchase it.

Lemmings! I loved that game.

I remember that. I used to collect CVG… until they became … pro-S*ny… the damned fetchers.
And I wouldn’t call it any more meaningful than any other.

The truth of the matter?

No matter how you put it… the four canon Panzer Dragoon titles should occupy slots #1 through #4 in any such game list… and I’d personally put Sonic CD in #5… provided it was the Jap/Eur version (don’t like the american version music).

But none of this compares to my anger at the GameFAQs “best game ever” thing… That whole popularity contest was practically rigged from the start… setting PDS against Goldeneye in the first round… and the fact that the majority of people voted for Goldeneye… possibly one of the most overrated games ever made… well… it was unforgivable. They should all have been shot downside the stomach with a double-barrelled shotgun and left to die.

Why settle for past tense? You can still love it.
