True. It does. Anybody forced into taking an economics class knows that competition usually results in the creation of a better product. In all honesty, the console competitions are one of the reasons video games have improved so much in the years–companies constantly strive to out-do each other in an attempt to gain control.
In all honesty, I’m completely for the console wars. My only problem is with the fanatic gamers who’ll chew me out because I don’t own a Gamecube, or cuss me out for having an Xbox.
How so?How are games getting better ?
A console is released and that’s that. There is no change in the product “console”.
Game developers should be competing between each other and not have big companies buying them. That’s the sort of competition that amkes games better.
Microsoft getting there first (or paying them more) with say, Blue Dragon. Is the game a better game because it’s beieng released on the 360 rather than the PS3?
It doesn’t make the games better, it makes the hardware better. You’re much more likely to make the most badass console you can if you know that there are two other companies out there making new consoles who would like nothing better than to steal your customers in the next round.
Now, whether or not fancier hardware leads to better games is a whole new can of worms.
Fancier hardware can lead to technically better games. For example, Shenmue on the Mega Drive? I think not. A lot of the time this level of technical schwaz contributes to a more enjoyable game; but not always. Personally I see gameplay as a moot point when in this sort of discussion: A company cannot simply create a fantastic-playing game, it requires a lot of luck and a certain je ne sais quoi. You can’t judge the industry on gameplay, because whether or not a game plays well is a matter of opinion.
But you can judge it on graphics? Can you judge it fairly based on graphics?
And I’m not eliminating hardware evolution out of the picture (that would be dumb and impossible) but I think that evolution will occur outside the consoles.A given graphical card shouldn’t be locked on a box for 7 years…
