It wasn’t until the PS2 came out, and look how successfully that has sold with the guarantee that you can play your old games on it.

Well I think it’s got to do with Microsoft not using an Intel processor on the next system, but an IBM developed one. That means if there is any backwards compatibility then it would have to be emulated. Anybody who’s used Girigiri probably knows that can be a real pain.
For the Saturn, yes…
If there is no x86 architecture in the XBOX2, there will be no direct compatability. But you could emulate it nonetheless. But I think we are getting off-topic.
