Capcom Classics, score one for Digital Eclipse

Here I was, about to write Digital Eclipse off the fucking map after WASTING $20 on Midway Classics 3, which was, an absolute mess of bad/buggy emulation, they deliver the goods on Capcom Classics Collection.

At $20, this collection sports 22 GEMS from Capcom’s arcade history (and a Super Nintendo game!). (That’s less than a dollar a game!!!)

Here’s a rundown of what you get for your money.

1942
1943
1943 KAI
Bionic Commando
Commando
EXED EXES
Final Fight
Forgotten Worlds
Ghosts N’ Goblins
Ghouls N’ Ghosts
Super Ghouls N’ Ghosts
Gun.Smoke
Legendary Wings
MERCS
Pirate Ship Higemaru
Section Z
Son Son
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II Championship Edition
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting
Trojan
Vulgus

Now, obviously, some of the games aren’t Capcom’s top tier titles…but, like some of the more obscure titles in the Namco Museums, they provide a very valid history lesson…even if you only play them a few times.

The really GOOD stuff, (the Ghosts and Goblins series, the Street Fighter series…hell, almost everything but the obscurities) is really well translated to the PS2, with only a FEW minor quibbles in the emulation and translation.

There are a few titles that have sound problems (namely Ghouls and Ghosts sound effects are rather LOW vs the music) and the color palettes seem really muted on most of the games (which probably has something to do with the fact that the games are all in their original arcade code…and arcade monitors have a different gamma than a standard television set and the resolution runs vertical instead of horizontal, making colors bleed out differently.)

Again, only a minor quibble. They all control well, have good menu options, and play at the CORRECT CPU SPEEDS!!! (unlike the overclocked crap on Midway Classics 3)

This is a fucking AWESOME deal for $20, and games like Bionic Commando and Ghouls and Ghosts remind me why I love Capcom so.

9/10

GO GET IT!

It seems you buy a game every single week!?!?
I was definitely looking into this one so thanks for the review! I am a sucker for the classics.

Not every week per say…

there are weeks and weeks that go by with nothing that I’m interested in, but there have been a few weeks here and there in the past month or so where some PSP games, “classics collections”, and the random budget priced title, have come out that I’ve been really interested in.

I can totally afford it on my salary, and we only live once right?

Right now we’re in that time where games can be as cheap as chips because the next gen is just over the horizon. 2 Xbox / PS2 games for ?20, DC games for a fiver…

It’s just so good.
