Kirbys Tilt N tumble was a GBC game with tilt sensors in it too.
There’s no doubt that Sony want to take every idea that any competitor has and use it in their own device - it damages the USPs of rival products and is generally good business sense.
Hey, if Nintendo claimed touch screens as their own gaming innovation, I’m sure Sony can blur the line with tilt sensors too
Of course, Wiki is maintained by the public, so the information may be wrong. However I remember my Dreamcast cost ?200 on release day, so $299 sounds about right to me.
Dreamcast was NZ$600 on launch day, if that helps.
Wishful thinking much? Having a standard controller seems to me one of the least significant “drawbacks” of those that can be called this coming generation, but it’s something I guess. I’d be amazed if MS is even concerned about it, they can sit back and let Nintendo and Sony prove the appeal of their advanced controller functions then easily step in line once (and if) it actually becomes an issue. The analogue button didn’t win the day for N64, and few even remember much less care anymore that N was first with it.
In a hindsight kind of way the PS3 price isn’t even that surprising, and I have to believe they would have delayed the truth longer if they thought they could get away with it. But consider the fact Sony has to deal with all the other companies who will be trying to sell Blueray players soon for what, $600-1000? If they announce PS3 at $400 in six months they’d be bending all their license partners over the table. Of course that’s aside from the actual manufacturing cost. Also reasons to doubt any major surprises.
I’m not even going to get into arguing FOR anyone this gen, but predicting losers at this point, especially the contender with the least to prove now, seems especially factional.
We’d be taking EMG’s on that one.
As for the tilt sensor, Microsoft released a pad for PC in 2000 or something that had the same tihng. As did other peripheral companies. The tilt didnt revolutionise gaming back then, it’s potential impact for today is still up for question.
Look, Sony tacked this on so I dont think it’s going to get an awful lot of use. I think it will become synonomous for some genres but utterly useless for others. WHEREAS Nintendo have built the wiimote into the fundametnal design of the machine. The wiimote will be revolutionary because it has to be, otherwise Nintendo are boned.
No way am I gonna get a PS3 right when it comes out. The only game I want for it (thus far) is VF5, but I’m gonna wait till it becomes a lot cheaper before I spend my cash on it. I’ll probably end up getting a Wii and/or 360 way before I get a PS3
Here’s a glimpse of what Microsoft’s up against. Final Fantasy XIII, love or hate Square Enix, looks very impressive. The days of CG footage seem to be over, as everything’s actually rendered in real-time. Even get a (very) small glimpse of some of the game’s combat engine (which puzzles me slightly).
It’s nice but then agehn all FF have been nice in terms of graphics (within it’s console’s limitations) so I have to wait for some details on gameplay. From what i read tho it seems this one is gonna change a lot of things.
Microsoft got Blue Dragon, from one of the original creators of the FF series (maybe THE creator, maybe something else, not sure). From the video seen so far it reminds me a lot of Skies of Arcadia.

From the very little I’ve seen of FF13, I’m not impressed. Of course, it may have clever ideas, and lots of gameplay (none of which will naturally show up in a teaser trailer), but I think the designs were done while Nomura was sleep-drawing. The guy has oh-so-cleverly churned out yet another game full of “cool” characters in black leather coats set in a rundown future city.
I swear the guy has shares in a cosplay company or something, because all his designs seem geared towards Myspace kiddies.
Sony had better have some amazing launch titles prepared for the PS3, otherwise it’s finished. Not everyone will be prepared to wait for the next MGS and FF for years when the competition is not only offering some amazing titles and graphics, but isn’t going anywhere.

Let’s hope that Square-Enix has more competition to worry about in the future.
S-E has competition from Namco (Xenosaga,Tales of…), Atlus (Shin Megami Tensei, Persona), Sega (Phantasy Star, Shining), Mistwalker (Hironobu Sakaguchi is a brand to be reckoned with, if nothing else), Bioware (NWN2), Nippon Ichi (All those damn SRPGs!)…
Of course if you include Japan-specific games, then the list balloons to ridiculous proportions.
That’s not even including the internally developed games such as Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, Front Mission…

In the West yes, but in Japan its SONY’s already . I think the PS3 will have a realy though time inthe USA this time around though

None of them have the same world-wide brand awareness as FF. FF is the equivalent of the Star Wars brand here.
Sega hasn’t been competing with SE for the past few years either. Not really. So far, they’ve tried to follow the leader, which isn’t Sega at its best. Of course, this will change now that Sega has money on its side.
BioWare? So far, their RPGs were partly successful due to established brands (D&D and SW). Now of course, they have backing from M$, and so can be free to delve into the realm of original IPs.
SE can sell almost anything with FF in the title. Such is the brand’s market penetration.
I assume that Sony will retain a lot of its marketshare here thanks to Final Fantasy 13, but how long are people prepared to wait, and are they really prepared to pay 500 pounds for a console that is an equivalent of the 360 overall?
Only time will tell. I’ll be busy playing WoW for the next few months anyway.
I don’t know who Sony’s trying to sell the PS3 to. They’re trying to throw this out as an all-in-one videogame and digital media management device, hoping that Blu-Ray becomes the dominant format for the upcoming HD era, yet the average consumer doesn’t even know what Blu-Ray OR HD-DVD is. And it’s not like there’s a blatant leap that Joe D. Consumer can clearly see like the jump from VHS to DVD was, considering the average person doesn’t have a $2000 television in their household, nor are they all that interested in spending that much when their current television still works just fine (granted, HD is supposed to be standard in 2008, but there’ll be D/A converters on hand anyways). The average gamer isn’t going to fork out $600 for a system, and if I was a parent, I definitely wouldn’t be spending $800 for the core system and a couple of games when I could go buy the competition’s system and more games and still have $300 more to spend (or save).
To me, this all looks like financial suicide. But then, I’m not a professional marketer or anything, so what do I know?
Edit: Note that I am speaking in terms of the situation in USA… I have no idea what things are like overseas. I don’t see PS3 being the blatant industry leader this time around, not with that pricetag.
They might remain the leader, but their lead over the competition will become much much shorter this time around. Heck, everywhere I look on the internet gamers seem to be most interested in the Wii out of the three new consoles. But of course, there still are those millions of casual gamers annex Sony fanboys…
Gadget freaks, people who want to be cool and people who will buy the PS3 because they bought a PS2 and they bought THAT because they bought a PS1.
I can only speculate that Sony is hoping the early adopters who just have to buy the latest technology will buy the PS3. After all, if one was going to buy a Blu-Ray player anyway, why not spend a little more and get a game system with it? Buying a PS3 is probably going to be one of the more cost-effective ways to get both Blu-Ray and a game system. I know people who still don’t have proper DVD players because they just use their PS2s. So if someone is going that route anyway, it might not be that bad.
I don’t know how many people are though, especially since Blu-Ray has a competitor and the current DVD standard did not. The games on PS3 do look good, but they don’t look $600 good. They don’t seem to play $600 good either, though admittedly it’s hard to get into a demo on the show floor. Final Fantasy XIII had one of the more popular trailers at the show, but it probably isn’t going to see the light of day until 2008 (my guess anyway–we’ll probably see a playable next E3 and then it’ll go on sale a year after) so it’s not likely to be an early system seller.
I think Sony’s going to lose ground in this generation’s console wars, but that may not be such a bad thing. I’ll likely get a PS3 eventually anyway, but only after the price drops to something reasonable. If that means waiting two or three years so be it. I have more than enough games in my backlog to keep me occupied until then. Failing that… there will probably be one form of WoW or another.
And hey guys, I’m back for a visit. I met up with Abadd at E3 and seeing him again reminded me that I hadn’t stopped by in a while, so I figured I’d see how you guys are doing. Nice to see not much has changed.
Good to hear from you again, Rune Lai.
…or spend less than the price of a Blu-Ray player. If we consider that each PS3 is sold at a loss, then I think it’s possible that Sony may sell the PS3 for less than the price of most standalone Blu-Ray players. This Samsang Blu-Ray player, for example, is going to be sold for US$1000.
But, like Parn said, when it comes down to it will the causal movie watcher even care? Unlike a games console where with each generation the graphics become closer and closer to photo realistic quality, movies already are photo realistic. Will people want to replace their existing DVD collections… repurchase movies which they already own in a solid, digital format? And then replace those movies again in 10 years if UHDV takes off?
Sony has a history of supporting proprietary formats that simply haven’t become mainstream. Betamax, Minidisc, UMD, ATRAC, the list goes on. I can’t help but feel that Blu-Ray will join that list.
