Sega signs up Silicon Knights

Actually, all major publishers do this. It’s just something that Sega hasn’t done too much of in the past.

Ubisoft, Activision, and heck, even Nintendo all publish externally developed/acquired titles. Not something exclusive to Take Two/EA/MS.
True bu they have been most active in recent months.
HeHe TakeTwo has GTA and that’s it. Most of thier other games bomb at retail

I don’t have any problem with SEGA getting some western talent to make games for them just like in the MD days (Thought I wouldn?t class SK as talent). Thats fine for the massmarket, but it’s going to need more than that to pull it’s out of it’s hole

What about the hardcore SEGA fans ??.
It’s like SEGA forgot about them, while the casuals have a bloody good laugh at the few SEGA fans left.
The Top brass at SEGA need to remember that it’s fans liked games like Rez, JSR, Swtich (I love that game) games that only SEGA would even think about making, with a sort of underground feel to them. SEGA always been seen as the otherside/underground

We need In-House games with the vision and creativity along the likes of JSR, REZ.
SEGA games just look so dull at the mo (That’s a massive problem). Even hardcore SEGA fans don’t haven’t much to shout about these days apart from Out Run II SP, Or Ollie King (real SEGA games in terms of looks) but they look to remain in the arcades only.

We need the likes of AM#2 to get thier name back inthe home. A few years back ,evenbody seen them as the best bunch of programers around. Now more people see’s to think that Team Ninja.

Where’s the new JSR from SEGA ? (I mean in terms of it’s Art Desgin)
No instead we see Capcom’s Clover St push the envelope with VJ II, and the stunning looking Okami (all this after SEGA more or less gave the world Cell shading).
The 2 Shinobi’s were hopelessly out classed by the likes of DMC and O.TO.GI what the heck is up with SEGA Art design and programing ?.

Even Sony as it?s own answer to Ex Team Andromeda with it?s ICO Team. While Sony is showing off the visuals and unique art design of Shadow of Colossus.
SEGA shows off nothing It?s all very depressing.

I didn?t like SEGA because they acted like EA ect. I liked SEGA because they gave us games that most 3rd Party?s would dare try and because their Art depts ect were the best they was (Space Harrier still looks great in terms of Art Direction).

For GOD shake SEGA give the faithful something we can really shout about (only SEGA can do that) and looking forward too.
Fine give Shadow a Gun and his own game. But then give us a pure Sonic game as well (only play as Sonic and levels just bulit around him and his speed.
So you?re pleasing the casuals and the Hardcore, that way everybody happy.

I don’t think we’re going to see a true 3D Sonic game for some time. We will see one eventually, but not until the next generation of consoles have arrived.

And I thought Nightshade was good (Sega should have stuck with the Shinobi brand). It suffered because there was only so much Sega could do with the PS2 hardware.

At least Sega localized both Otogi games at a loss no less. Shouldn’t gamers be grateful for that? Besides, do the people at Sega even want to uphold a reputation of bridging the gap between hardcore and mainstream tastes? I’d like to think so.

When you see what Capcom can do on the PS2 (DMC) There’s no reason why SEGA shouldn’t be able to do the same on the PS2 (even though it’s cr*p).

I’m glad to see that SEGA brought O.TO.GI over here, but it still does make me feel much better when I see the likes of Team Ninja, Capcom, Fromsoftware makes better actions games than SEGA.

Also I would like to thing people with in the SEGA group still remember the Hardcore SEGA fan, and the games they like to see.

If Sega truly cared about its hardcore fans, all three scenarios of Shining Force III would have been translated into English a long time ago. Even a modern-day compilation disk would show that Sega truly cares about its fans. If Sega truly cared, then Shining Force Neo would be the Strategy/RPG it was meant to be.

At least you can take comfort in the fact that Devil May Cry 2 was a steaming pile of crap. :anjou_happy:

That was never going to happen when you had that prized Twat Berine in charge at SOA. I’m shocked he even gave the go-ahead for the 1st one.

I’m really on about SEGA JP btw. They made the best games up untill 2 years ago.

Even they have lost it at the mo.

Outrun 2 as been the only top quality game to come out of sega in the yeas since abadonding the DC IMO.

Sega shouldn’t care about their fans.Sega should get out of the whole they ar ein right now and then when Hell is over develop quality games not trying to please a particular audience.

I think some of you are totally over reacting about Sega games. There has n’t been a bad Sega game since the DC era.

I don’t have a problem with Sega building up it’s western software. In ther past Sega’s western software libary consists of quite good games. It will also stop the gap of Sega games that don’t come out for months upon end.

With CONDEMNED being made by Monolith I wonder if Silicon Knights intend to make another survival horror title? That’s a genre that Sega rarely visits
since DEEP FEAR. Sega may even give them the IP to this game for one of their new partners to develop for.

Plus Amuze is making a new game for the next gen, and since they have only made games for Sega at this point(and Sega grabbing western studios now) could be another potential Sega game.

What i can’t help but wonder is that what are the japanese divisons working on for the next gen? Apart from TCA whose first game for Sega will be released on current consoles,The other studios are only making IP for Sega for the next generation systems. Does this mean that Sega japan won’t have any IP ready for the first batch of games of the next gen game systems?

Ok, they haven’t really been totally crap. But, in a sense, they have been. Why would someone buy an “average” or “ok” or “not bad” Sega game and not a GREAT game from another company? Just out of love for Sega? Why should someone spend his time playing an “ok” game that simply doesn’t make him think is horrible while playing and is even perhaps entertaining at times instead of playing a thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling game?

So, when pitted against the GREAT games out there, “Average” or “ok” games ARE bad.

YOur right, they have all been mediocre, which frankly isnt what I expect from SEGA.

Personally I found a game like Gunvalkyrie a great game and I’m sure most other people found it just average or even bad. That’s just an example.

Well, Gun Valkyrie started life as a Dreamcast game and then switched to X-box so I’d guess they still haven’t released a great game since the DC era… I guess the Otogi series is good as well but not something like a must have title. And when we have to search around and think deeply to findtwo or four worthy titles then something’s very wrong anyway…

ORTA (a master piece), Moneyball 1/II, VF 4/EVO (best Fighter ever), SEGA GT 2002, JSRF were all AAA games and productions.

Then SEGA backed them up with the likes of F-Zero, HOTD 3, Beach Spikers, GV, Toe Jam & Earl 3 Gunvalkyrie, PSO II which were all AA productions.

And while the likes of Blood Will Tell, Shinobi, Billy H are far from poor games they are just so average (by SEGA terms) and outclassed by other games.

The last 2 years have been poor by SEGA standards with all Out Run II giving me somthing to really cheer (ie only SEGA can do this).
Still in saying that Altered Beast is a right laugh, and I’ve heard nothing bt great things about Spike Out Battle Street.
And with any luck SEGA JP are busy working on the next Gen productions and will come out fighting.

Speaking of Gunvalkyrie (some awesome level and bosses) I would love to see SEGA make a part II. The 1st game was brilliant ,if a bit short.
A Sequel with better controls , 2 Vs and Live modes and more levels would rule. Also squeal to Hundred Swords will massive multi player online modes would rule too

Now this is more like it. At least you fellow TWOA forum members are more sensible then other Sega related forums I won’t mention. We all know the games are bad in Sega terms but they are still decent and you guys have given examples of the good games Sega has produced post DC era. I wish
idiots like Penny Arcade relises that. Thank you very much for your fair
assement of Sega’s current situation.

You, sir, have just won the Intarweb. Please proceed directly to Go and collect your $200.

This is the problem that Sega faces as a third party developer. While holding its own platform, it was developing in a relative vacuum. Sega’s main purpose was to fill out its console’s lineup with games that were unique to their console, and could leave the “blockbusters” to the 3rd parties. Sega was guaranteed to have a captive audience when it had its own console. However, as a third party developer, Sega now has to compete directly with other developers for consumer $$. As a third party developer (of the size of Sega, at least), it isn’t enough to make mediocre games. You have to make AAA blockbuster titles, or else no one will buy your games.

Well it’s not like their competion are making AAA titles on a regular base either. Konami is just milking the MGS series and Capcom has been struggling until they had DMC3 and RE4 to save their necks.

Capcom had Onimusha, RE series, and DMC (and their RPGs sell relatively well, but I don’t know if they’re considered AAA).

Namco has had Tekken 3 and 4, Soul Calibur 2, Dead to Rights, Ace Combat, Pac Man World (this one may not really be a AAA title, but it sold just as well), just to name a few.

EA has the Bond series (several of which have broken 1 million in sales), NFS:U 1 and 2, Medal of Honor, Def Jam Vendetta, LOTR, Harry Potter, Madden, NBA Live, NFL Street, NBA Street, NCAA Football, the Sims, etc.

Activision has Call of Duty, Spider-man 1 and 2, THPS, True Crime, etc.

THQ has their wrestling games, Red Faction, Spongebob Squarepants, and a bunch of other top-level licenses.

Square has FFX, FFX-2, and Kingdom Hearts.

Konami has MGS2, MGS3, Yu Gi Oh, Castlevania, etc.

Rockstar/Take Two has GTA3, GTA:VC, GTA:SA, Max Payne, Max Payne 2, Midnight Club, just to name a few.

Eidos has the Hitman series. And… uh… nm

Ubisoft has Prince of Persia, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Rainbow Six.

And even Bandai has the DBZ series, each of which has broken 1 million.

Sega has… Sonic and VF. And Sega is one of the largest companies on this list.

Well that’s been a problem. Most of the titles you mentioned are not AAA titles but still sell a decent amount. Sega needs to up it’s game in the third party world to compete and sell decent amount of units as well. From what i can see of them so far only certain key titles sell well mainly in Japan and
the Sonic games in Europe. Because there is no middleground game, No game from Sega that has cross over appeal yet, they have to rely on individual markets lately to get the big sales.

Capcom has released the first RE game for a while that has the fans excited
about in a long time. DMC 3 has seem to revive the series after the critical backlash DMC2 received.Yet apart from the obvious titles Abadd,Capcom and Konami still release games that get back better numbers from their
average middle game titles because they still have a good cross appeal in all the markets.

DORORO for Sega did well in Japan but terrible everywhere else. The now defunct ESPN series did well in america but not so in Europe and Japan. Sonic did very well in Europe but not in the US and Japan.

Once Sega solves the problem of a cross appeal game and get more of them out there they should start looking like a real third party company and not an ex hardware company acting like it still has it’s own console.

How do you define AAA title, then?

With maybe one or two exceptions, the titles I mentioned were given AAA support. The term “AAA” has nothing to do with quality. Granted, it is usually a good indication of high quality, but rather, AAA simply means that the game has a high level of expectation to sell.
