From what I’ve heard, Nintendo is conservative financially, which does not necessarily translate to a lack of innovation in terms of game design.

Umm… I don’t think nintendo is “lost” in any way, they did some wrong choices with the GC but they are showing improvement in various areas they lacked in the past.
They have improved their relationships with third party developers, what with creating F zero in collaboration with Sega and “lending” Link to Namco and other such things, they will focus on good 3rd party relationships even more so in the future and they are the only company that seems to care more about new gameplay ideas rather than just create the most powerful new console. And they have done some of the greatest games of the current generation as well anyway. The GC came too late, that was their biggest mistake.
Oh and I dont consider connectivity as “bs”, games like Zelda the four swords are excellent if you have the friends for it, and I’m sure in Japan it’s very common for ppl to have whats required to enjoy these games.
They are the ones that are most likely to create the “best” next gen console with the info I’ve seen so far.
Read this interview:

And since this reply was written before kadamose’s post (i just didn’t post it cos I got busy) I’d like to mention that I agree with Lance about Nintendo being as innovative as Sega. So what if Pokemon if what kept them afloat? They have a lineup of other excellent in every aspect games. And innovative ones. Pikmin anyone? Oh wait I sense that someone will say that game sucks
I only wish Sega had something as succesful as Pokemon to keep them afloat as well and still be in the hardware market.
PS: I hope this argument doesn’t end up in a discussion identical to that other thread (yeah you know which one I’m talking about)… Everyone had posted their opinions there and starting it in here as well will be fairly pointless especially since the argument ended from possible lack of anything new to add…
Edit: Added the interview link, forgot it before, doh! it’s an interesting read
Now that is a good point. Sega should have tried to do something addictive to the kids to pump their parents’ money to them. A crazy fad like that could finance any company for years.
I hope this rumour is true. I’d love a new PD game (New ships please) I wouldn’t mind waiting for it to come around on the next generation system. Though i think i’d prefer it be on Xbox next or what have you. Sony has left with dissapointed with PS2 especially compared to how great (at least i think) the PSX was. PD on a Nintendo system just wouldn’t feel right I think. Don’t get me wrong i love Nintendo and my cube but i just don’t see Nintendo and PD working together. And MS has been impressing me with the Xbox as of late. Lots of good titles, especially on XBL.
No, -old- ships please =P
Actually, even Sony is becoming innovative. Take a look at the combat system in Mark of Kri, or the best game of this generation: Ico. While Sony may pump out GT after GT, they’re still doing some creative stuff (I believe Ape Escape is Sony, as is the actual development for Lifeline).
Sega is innovative in that it’s games (used to be) “quirky.” However, while Nintendo rarely ever makes leaps in terms of game design, 95% of everything they release is solid, in terms of quality. 2 of my top 5 titles for the best games of this generation are Nintendo titles. The only reason why Nintendo gets stuck with the non-innovative label is due to the fact that they reuse their brand characters all the time. But, let’s face it… gamers eat it up, so Nintendo will continue to do it. They’re merely giving the people what they want… but at least they’re doing it with quality.
it’d be one of the most stupid ideas to bring a PD5 out on the xbox.
No it wouldn’t! I’m too poor to buy another console! LET ME HOPE!
i think gradient dragon morphing (PDS) would be crazy cool.
like instead of glide, heavy, and base wings it would go back to the agility, defense, attack, and spiritual. so the unused analog stick would move the little marker around on the circle that appears when you move the stick.
that would make it so crazy, morphing your dragon constantly
… I don’t need to be any more crazy…
just give Mr. Bear or Mis. Merrit a call. (and mind your manners!)
(415) 701-3970 or (415) 701-3974
they will friendly tell you that no Panzer Dragoon game is currently in development, wich is in fact the truth, unfortunately =(
(the phone numbers are accesssible from any telephone book, they work in the PR department after all)
…uh?
Abadd are you sure this isnt what you actually meant:

Heh you knew what i meant.
Heh… Possibly. But, I have yet to play Grim Fandango, which I hear is brilliant.
Also, there have been many games that were very amazing for their time… it’s just that Ico is standing on the shoulders of giants. So, I guess in that respect, yes, it is the greatest game of all time (IMO), but only on an absolute scale. On a relative scale? I’m not so sure. Definitely top 3, though.
Ico is pretty cool. Grim Fandango is better, though you can’t really compare those two… though both are 3d and adventures…
ICO is a true masterpiece. It’s 1 of the best games I?ve played on any system. It many ways it?s Sony very own Panzer Dragoon.
It how the whole world feels alive and organic, as it?s own unique language/dialog, fantastic music. And like SAGA It?s feels it was a labor of love by the development Team, and like SAGA as a truly special ending
Sony do produce/publish some original games these days too. Vib Ripple Eyetoy, Flipnic, Frequency, Mojib Ribbon, Siren, Primal, Ghost Hunter to name a few.
All all original Sony games.
Though I must say it was bad enough we got VF IV and Shinobi on a Sony system. I hate to see Sony get a Panzer Dragoon game
Just a question : Rynex, it’s the name of the space fighter in Thunder Force V, no ?
(… what an useless post in this discussion…)
I read about this rumor in OXM a few days ago. But remember, it’s just that, a rumor. Still, though…
drool
What pisses me off about Nintendo’s connectivity thing is that they seem to assume that everyone owns a GBA, which is just plain arrogant. All they’re doing is making entire games inaccessible to those of us who don’t have a GBA and/or don’t have three friends with GBAs, and don’t have the cash lying around to buy four of the damn things.
It’s okay as a gimmick, but when you start emphasizing it over things like online gameplay, it gets a little silly.
