Hmm… I expected there wasn’t anything more to know about this, but I’ve just accidentally stumbled across something. It looks like the fire-breathing PDO box probably was an “official” mock-up after all, as the game’s publishers (Infogrames / Atari) display it on several of their international web sites. It seems that pages like these are where it originated from:
It was presumably just a mock-up made by Infogrames based on early official images then, that was (hopefully) never meant to go on sale. It looks like it was the work of a similar creative genius to whoever made that US Zwei box…
Being both a resident of the US and having Panzer Dragoon Zwei, I know for a fact that the front and back of Panzer Dragoon Zwei is right.
I heard around some parts concerning Orta that this may have been a proposed cover art for PDO. The US cover art decided some time ago, this may have been true.
wait, so what exactly connects PDO to infogrames/atari? i think i misunderstood something… i just want to know why infogrames has PDO listed anywhere on their site(s).
infogrames has always seemed like a pock mark on any game they’ve published; they are one of the main sources of crap in the industry. i’m somewhat surprised sega even LET them publish the game for all the negative associations it would lead to.
but i guess now we know the reason for that disgrace of a cover. thankfully someone with respect for the series must have stepped in and said
“wow. that sucks. did ever you consider using good box art?”
the marketing team just blinked a few times and looked around at each other.
“don’t worry, dudes. i got it covered.” the stranger said with a wink
