Phantasy Star Universe, whoo!
PSU is not touching the original series continuity, as Algo’s story is over and the original creators wanted to move away and start fresh. However, Sonic Team said that players of the old games will see a lot of familiar stuff.

The game will never see a GameCube release. With as much content as they’re packing into this game, it’d never work.

A port to 360 might happen in the future, but probably not until it’s had some time to sell on PS2 first.
What exactly are the original members behind the four PHANTASY STAR games doing? I know most of them can be located in the team formally known as Overworks but all they’ve produced RPG wise is the co production of the SAKURA TAISEN games and thier auteur peice ETERNAL ARCADIA. I would have expected more from these RPG masters…

As for PSU the game’s got some nice visuals and the art style is very unique but i’m not sure about the direction Sonic Team is taking the series in.

Sonic Team’s direction for Phantasy Star Universe looks great to me. Phantasy Star Online was rushed due to Sega needing to ditch Dreamcast (the announcement came three months after the game shipped). The original intent was to tie the game in with the original series, but due to Sega’s financial situation, they had to cut a lot of content and ship the game with whatever was finished. This is why PSO feels incomplete… it really was an incomplete game. Future episodes were to make quick cash, and it worked out. If anything, it probably helped fund PSU’s development.

Phantasy Star Universe has hit its second delay, but I have no problems with it. I’d rather they ship out a complete game than make a release date. Miyoshi stated that the game is for all intents and purposes done back in September, so… bug fixes is all they’ve been doing. I’m all for it.

The alternative to Sonic Team’s direction is to let Phantasy Star sit dead. Some old-school fans keep clamoring for another episode in Algo, but people need to let go of that. Algo’s story was finished with Phantasy Star IV, and the original creators said that if they did Phantasy Star V, it would be done outside Algo. It’s stated as such in the Phantasy Star Compendium, translated by Rebecca Capowski (do a Google search if you’re interested).

So long as Phantasy Star Universe maintains the “spirit” of the series, I’m happy.

Hm, I’ve suddenly had an idea what those 8 gigabytes might be for, it might perhaps be an indication that the single player spoken dialogue, of which there will be plenty, will be available in multiple languages. Here’s to hoping. XD I want to hear the japanese voices with convenient english subtitles. And people who can’t stomach the sound of japanese (and yes, I’ve met such people) can have english voices, or whatever their native tongue is.

And I agree with Parn, as long as it feels like a Phantasy Star I’ll be happy.

I meant if the series is going to be online from now on. I know PSU will be a proper offline game but i love to go for an offline PHANTASY STAR with no online play and possibly return to the turn based system attacks of the original.
